OK. Long story short. Yanked the motor. It was easy. I took the intake off to get at the torque converter bolts. I had a heck of a time getting the rh intake cam pulley bolt off. I had to use a pipe wrench on the cam. A 1" wrench spun along with heating, freezing, etc. One of the cam cap bolts stripped so I beat on it with a 3/8 and got it off. Anyway, the headgaskets had failed. New ones went on and in went the motor. Test drive and the temp gauge was dancing. After we put on the a/c it got hot. Pulled over and opened the hood. My son didn"t tighten a heater hose clamp properly. Tightened it, topped it off and burped it. Runs good now!

Hi. I just bought a 99 Legacy with 124k and an overheating problem. I pick it up tomorrow. Thanks to this board, I knew what I was getting into.

I'm going to look at a 99 Legacy 30yr anniv tomorrow. 126k , auto leather, sunroof, etc but it has an overheating problem. From reading this forum, it sounds like head gaskets. Is $1000 too much to pay for it? What else needs to be done at this mileage while the motor is out? I'm buying it for my son's first car and both of us will be working on it. I'm a fairly decent mechanic and hope to teach my son a couple of things. Thanks in advance.
