  1. Timing belt maybe?

I was going up a hill at around 55 MPH, when all of a sudden, the engine revved up to 4k+, and then quit. I pulled over, and when I tried to restart the engine, it cranked/turned over, but wouldn't start. I popped the hood, and checked what I could, everything looks fine. I tried again the start the engine, and with the hood up, I could see the engine rocking/vibrating violently as i tried to start it.

Any ideas? Is this car junk now?

  2. Hey, so my radio (aftermarket) has been squirrelly since i installed it, and the old aftermarket one that came with the car was also squirrelly. Meaning it shuts off randomly. I could deal with the occasional shut off, however now it won't turn on at all. Weird thing is, the cd ejec t mechanism still works (it whirs when I press the eject button), so I know the radios gettimn some power. Any ideas on where to start ? I checked the power line where ts soldered in the harness, and it looks fine.

    Thanks so much!

  3. Hey all,

SO I hit a rock pretty good, and i dented both my oil pan and my tranny pan. The tranny pan I hammered out, and the car is fine, but I am worried about the oil pan. are there any mechanical parts inside the bottom half of the pan. I read somewhere that the oil sender could have been broken or blocked, leading to a complete engine failure/rebuild. I have driven the car 100+ miles since I knocked the pan in, and it *seems* to be running fine. What are the symptoms of a failed/blocked oil sender?

I probably will get around to hammering out the dent, but if its not causing any harm, i'd like to wait until i need to change my oil again before i remove the pan etc.

    Pics attached.

    Thanks!!!

  4. Thanks so much guys! Is the pulling the tranny pan doable on the side of the road? I am going to try and do it today, I'll be buying an oil change pan and some sealant for reattaching the pan. Anything else needed besides a 10 mm socket wrench? if it's really stuck on there what should I do? Pb blaster?

One more thing: Adjusting the linkage, easy or hard?

  5. Hi guys,

SO I've had my 97 Subaru for about two months now, and the transmission has some weird problems. It seems to be an overdrive problem, as it only happens when at higher speeds.

When: After I have been driving a highway speed for a while. Or when the car has been in the sun.

Noise: louder almost turbo like, but grind-ier (bad) noise.

Other Symptoms: loss of power and pickup. Car stereo turns on and off when the car is doing this. I sometimes can stop the radio malfunction (and the tranny problem), by turning the car off and on.

Doesn't happen all the time just sometimes.

Tranny fuid is light brown and smells slightly burnt.

I will be dropping the pan tomorrow, as I hit a rock square on and dented the ATF pan. Now the car is stuck in 2nd gear. I had a mechanic look at it, and he said that the linkage connector (i think) was frozen in place by the dented pan, and if I removed the pan and hammered out the dent it would work fine again.

HOPEFULY this will kill two birds with one stone, as the fluid will have to be changed after I drop the pan.

Any ideas about why the radio turns off/on? Seems related, but I don't know why. Also, the radio occasionally will turn off when I change some electrical thing in the car (turn on headlights, activate wipers, etc.)

Any help would be MUCH APPECIATED!

    Thanks y'all!

P.S: Does what the mechanic said about hammering the dent out seem legit? I really hope so, as I don't have a ton of cash. :(

  6. dealer add on subaru remote start/security system.

you will see this kind of wireing in dealer add on fog lights and cruise control units as well

HImm, I have CC, but i think it came with the car (no clue rly though). WOuld it be easy to get a keyless entry system/remote start hooked up if the box is already in th ecar?

and why would there be a wire goign from nowhere to noiwhere with a fuse in it?

just making sure: if i disconnect the neg batt. term., and unplug a bunch of these F#$%@ers, as lomng as i plug em back where i found them, i'm not gonna break anything, right?

  8. Hey guys! I it bought my first car about a week ago, it's a 1997 Subaru legacy outback. It's awesome! But I blew almost all my money on the car. It's in great shape, except for a seized rear caliper. I got all the parts I'll need too, but can't work on the car without a decent jack. The one that comes with the car is ok for changing a tire, but I dOnt think it's strong enough to liftthe car for a while while I figure out how to remove the caliper, clean it out, and reinstall it (it's a scissors jack, and the threads are a bit stripped/worn already.) Any suggestions for a mechanic that will let me use a jack or do one of y'all live in corvallis and could maybe loan me one?

    Thanks a million!
