If yours is still in one piece, 1) Take it out of the dash (two screws) 2) Soak it in a dilute solution of Mr. Clean or any other degreaser/cleaner of your choice 3) Rinse thoroughly 4) Apply graphite, etc. to the sliding mechanism and open/close to make sure it is all greased up 5) Reinstall Had problems with mine sticking on all but the warmest days due to a previous owner's soda mishaps. The syrup gels up nicely when cool. Found soda residue all throughout the dash cavity while I was putting in a new cd player. It should work like a charm after doing the procedure I described.

Been away from the computer for awhile so haven't been able to give an update. Anyways, turns out the problem was in my tires. Had just bought new tires two weeks ago and for some reason three were at 28 and the fourth was at 22. Thought I might have picked up a nail, etc in the lower one over the weekend but couldn't find anything. It was really starting to annoy me since everything checked out ok and it was running fine except for the mileage drop. After airing them back up, I'm back at about 24-25 mpg. -

Got between 9.4 and 10.0 KOhms for the wires so they all look good. What is an acceptable range on the plugs?? The measurement is made from the wire boot end to the probe I assume. -

10-4. Checked and rechecked physical connections. All lubed up with dielectric grease. Just got new wires within the past year, but will be rechecking them with the multimeter this evening after work. Resistances should be in the hundredths of an ohm, correct? -

So I didn't search well enough before posting. Found a recommended reset procedure as: 1) disconnect negative for 30 min 2) idle for 15 3) then drive, shut off Will give it a shot. -

You just unhook the battery to reset the ECU? -
So the factory CD receiver finally bit the dust on me. Got the "premium sound package" with a split receiver: top is radio/cassette and the bottom is the CD. Anybody ever pulled both units out, just replaced the CD, and added an aftermarket or OEM pocket/cubby hole?? Talked to the folks at Crutchfield and they didn't carry a "pocket". Figured good ole Subaru of America would have one but would charge their regular exhorbant amount.

Alrighty, so it's been starting for several days in a row now. Turns out, I had about 12 V coming from the ignition too. Just didn't have the key turned all the way, duh. Anyways, after a few sharp wallops with my pipe wrench on Saturday evening, it has been starting fine. Proves the old addage, if it doesn't work, hit it harder. Thanks again for the assistance folks.

Thanks for the tip. It's starting for the time being, and I put the light and voltmeter on it while it wasn't running and when it is. When the key is in the start/on position, I've got ~12v coming from the battery into the starter in both situations and no voltage on the slide connector going off to the ignition in both situations. Should there be voltage on the slide connector with the key in the on position or only when the key is actively being turned to start??

So I replaced my starter on the road in August in my 97 OBW 2.5 (AT) and now it's already going out in some form or fashion. Possibly, I got a bad starter from Advanced Auto. Turn the key and I don't even get a click. So I was thinking relay, but can't find a starter relay in my Haynes manual. So I bypassed the ignition and connected from the slide connector on the starter to the + battery terminal. It starts. So i would think the starter isn't the problem. Maybe somewhere in the wiring. Then next time it doesn't start, I beat on it with my trusty pipe wrench and voila, it starts up several times in succession up to this point. I'll probably pull it tomorrow and take it back to Advanced auto as they say they can't test it in the car. Just another problem since having my subaru since April. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
