Ok, I have used the search feature in an attempt to find a thread on replacing a cv axle, if I could find one that would be most helpful

Yesterday, I was just pulling into my driveway, and suddenly something in the drivers side made a loud popping noise, then I had no power to either of the front wheels. This is a 1988 gl 3 door fwd with lever 4WD. I have no fwd now and can only drive in 4wd, but makes a loud popping noise whenever the wheel is turned or whenever I hit even the slightest bump. I can't turn the wheel past 1 full rotation without my steering locking up completely. I was just wondering if there was a way that I could pull out the front axles rendering the car rwd. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the advice guys! I'm going to dig into it in the morning, just bought 4 brake pads and some cleaner. I will definitely not hesitate to ask questions haha:rolleyes:

to be honest I would not trust myself to do a reliable brake job, seen as I how I have never replaced pads before, let alone replace a caliper. And as for the transmission, the synchromesh is gone between 1st and second and there is no reverse in 4WD, and will barely engage in fwd. I don't have the money to put into this vehicle because the transmission isn't going to last a whole lot longer after the brakes, should I choose to do them. I would absolutely love to keep my hatchback, I love everything about the car. I just am trying to figure out what how I can keep it running while still being cost effective

ok, so here's the deal. I own a black 1988 gl 3door hatchback, lever 4WD with cruise control, power locks and windows, and a decent stereo system. My problem is that the brakes just went out (calipers and pads) and the local brake shop quoted me $900 for repairs. Is it honestly worth it to keep the car? I paid $1000 for this vehicle up front, and it is in need of a new transmission, alignment, struts, and other suspension-related repairs. I'm just not in a position where I could afford to repair my car, is there anywhere that would make a decent offer/trade that any of you know of?

My 1985 BumbleBeast came Running from California (USA) to my Country (Honduras) that year, My Familiy and I have Traveled All Across Central-America with it; Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa-Rica and Panama... Always Fully Loaded with 4 or 5 people & Baggage...
Something interesting I've found on the EA82's is that the More they Run, the Better they Behave!!!

I have noticed this with my 88 3door, if I don't drive it every day it doesn't perform as well especially in the cold

I can say hands down, yours is the absolute cleanest RX 3-door coupe I've seen so far. When I purchased my '88 GL 3-door it was in pretty rough shape, but it's a work in progress haha. I give you props for that beast, every time I see you post I just kinda drool a little bit looking at that avatar

Ice, snow, drove in the drainage ditch for a while (on purpose, it was easier to see than the road), through what I found out somewhere in Wyoming was the storm of the century. Well, for Nevada it was storm of the 'century'. In Wyoming they called it "oh, another Saturday"
Hahah you hit the nail on the head on that one. Owning a Subaru in Wyoming during the 5 winter months is pure enjoyment everytime you cruise by someone in their p.o.s. fwd and they wonder how a little coupe/sedan/wagon just passed them in 6" of powder:brow:

hammer the lip out and re-seat the bead. Then you can drive it to the junkyard for new wheels.
you can get the bead to seat if you can hold the tire against the rim while adding air at the same time. jack up the car or take the wheel off to do this.

I used two propane torches to heat the edge of the rim until it was red hot, then I bent it back into place with a pair of channel locks and finished the outside lip with the hammer. This was the result

Got our first snow storm in Wyoming yesterday, made the 15 minute drive to the mountain from my house haha:-p
Pictures in order of events that occured
about 6,500 ft at our lookout point
past the summit of the mountain, already made it through 3 foot snow drifts
back on casper mountain, pulled a wee little drift into an empty parking lot. nothing stops the '88 3-door:D
back at my house, a lil bit frosty from the trek. you can see the pumpkins from halloween still haha:drunk:
all in all only got stuck once, but made it out with the help of some firemen:Flame: and had a blast along the way:banana:

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone has a drivers side strut for the front, I will cover the cost of the part and shipping. Also let me know what other ea82 parts you guys have laying around I may be interested
