93 legacy 2.2 I have a question about my almost functioning cruise control... On flat land doing 70, I'll set the cruise control. The speed will drop to around 55-60 and hold steady. If I go up a slight incline it'll drop. If I go down a slight incline it'll gently get back up to around 60. So it IS working, just not engaging the accelerator to hold the speed constant. I don't know enough about cruise controls to know where to start troubleshooting, so....HELP!

93 legacy 2.2 wagon cruise control will engage and power the vehicle forward, but much lower than the set speed, and then only on flat or descending inclines. If I encounter a slight uphill, then it slows. Example: I set it at 45 MPH on a slight downhill, and it maintained it, but when I encountered an uphill portion of the road it slowed to 30 and stayed at thirty until the next downhill. At higher speeds (65 MPH) it won't maintain at all but will fall back to 55-60 even on flats or slight downhills. Thoughts? On a slightly unrelated note, the speedometer cable has recently(past 2 weeks) become noisy. Is it possible to lube, or should I just replace? The cruise issue is a year old, so I wouldn't think there's a correlation between the two, but...

So I'm now the owner of a 1993 Legacy L AWD wagon, 2.2L, 163,000 miles. Anyone tell me anything I need to know, good or bad, about this year/model?

the oil was the power steering pump. has a slight leak. will be r/r soon. And thanks for that better description of the manual button. Makes sense now. I just want to take this opportunity to thank everyone's effort during this buying/getting to know Sub's process. It was greatly appreciated...

Well I bought it. Seems to be doing ok so far. One question- (it's an automatic) There's a "Manual" button on the gear shift. I read the instructions in the manual, but it was kinda vague. Does this have any real practical value. (I won't be off-roading, this is mostly for snow)

Looking at a 1993 Legacy L awd wagon, 163,000 miles, mechanic owned til one year ago, inherited by son. Comes with extra set of wheels w/snowtires. looks mostly dry around the engine, a tiny little oil on top of the cylinder heads, but not enough to drip off...no ticking, knocking, etc. 2.2L. complete service records.

I am looking at buying a Subaru for commuting to work. I want a vehicle that is reliable, fuel efficient, and has all-wheel or four-wheel drive (automatic, not stick), since I live in a hilly area that is darn near impossible to get to/from when it snows. I settled on Subarus largely because of the symmetrical AWD layout, and the good gas mileage and reliability. Are there any Subarus more or less reliable than others? I have heard some talk about the reliability of the automatics in certain (non-Forester, I believe) models...something about overheating, I think. I'm going to be looking in the higher-mileage range of cars (read: cheaper, $2000-4000 or less). Any help would be appreciated!
