In the process of putting a different 5 spd into my '96 legacy and having a bugger of a time getting it to seat properly. Getting it right up to the alignment pins with about 3/4" gap between trans and engine. I think I have the clutch and input shaft mated just not the bearing. I have the engine lifted almost level or slightly rear down and have the trans. on a trans. jack. Any help appreciated. Getting frustrated over fighting with this over the last 2 days. Thanks.

I should have mentioned that the old transmission was turned in when I got the new one. Never though it would be an issue. Removed just about everything else from it. Lesson learned.

Bought a used 5 spd. transmission to put in my '96 Legacy. The used unit is from a '98 Legacy, a TY752VACAA. Much to my horror while getting ready to install it I found the shift linkage is actually different than the one on my '96. When I get the correct linkage will it still work on this newer transmission. Are the linkages interchangeable on the transmissions? That is once I get that stubborn pin out to remove the wrong linkage... grr. Thanks for any advice.

I'm in the middle of replacing my transmission and clutch on my '96 Legacy 2.2 w/248k. My question is do I bother replacing the seperator plate (it's the plastic one) and the rear main seal. It appears that neither are leaking. I'm inclined to install the metal seperator plate and leave the main seal in place. I understand these rear seals are not prone to leaks. There is also no guarantee that it won't leak if I stick a new one in. Any thoughts?

We own a 1996 Legacy Brighton that needs a transmission replacement or at least a new input shaft bearing, seals and maybe more... After speaking with a couple transmission shops I decided to look for a used unit. I've found two potential units so far. The question involves the transmission code and final drive. I understand that my unit (TY752VABBA) has a F.D. of 4.111. One used unit is from a 1996 Impreza (also a TY752VABBA) but has a F.D. of 3.90? Can that be right? Should I just go with the other unit, a TY752VAAAA, even though its not as good condition? It's F.D. is 4.111. I found the transmission information on the gearhack website. I appreciate any information you all might have. Would have joined the forum sooner but the car has been so reliable the last few years all it's needed has been gas, oil, and a timing belt. Thanks.
