Thanks to all who replied, I have been looking into after market filters and will check the filters you mentioned. The reason for the frequent oil changes is that I do alot of highway driving to work and and rack up 3k within two months. I have thought about using synthetic oil, but with the miles and frequent oil changes I'll stay with the fossil stuff.

I have a 05 Forester that I'm changing the oil on every two months. I always use a Subaru oil filter from the dealer, but at $9.00 plus it gets expensive. Are there any good web sites dealing in OEM Subaru parts (especially oil filters) that you can recommend?

[2005 Forester Wind Noise?]

Hi All

I checked all the old postings for wind noise and couldn't find anything that sounds like my problem, maybe someone can give me some ideas. I had the car back to the dealer today, a 2005 Forester with 1300 miles because I was hearing a faint "clunking" (lack of a better description) noise from the passengers side only at highway speeds. The sound doesn't follow engine rpm and doesn't increase with speed, nor does it change when turning. There is no noise at lower speeds, it starts around 45 mph up to 65 mph and is not constant. The service technician took a ride and confirmed that the noise isn't mechanical but wind passing over the mirror/window. The window gussets and gaskets don't seem to be a problem. If this is a design issue why is the noise only on the passengers side? The wind doesn't just blow on that side, shouldn't both sides of the car be the same? Has anyone come across this or have any suggestions I could try. The noise isn't too loud but it doesn't seem right to have this on a brand new car.

I just purchased my first Subaru, a 2005 Forester last week. Besides regular fluid changes, what other items should I be aware of to keep this car for many miles. I was told this engine has a timing chain instead of a belt, is this true? Is the 2.5 an interference engine? I've also read on this site about "o" rings leaking oil, is this a common problem on the 2.5? Any insight that can be shared about this car/engine and maintenance would be appreciated.

Care to share the info on which filter wrench you found, brand, and store?

Sure, I bought the cap wrench at Auto Barn and it is made by "Rite Fit" #A256 with a size of 68mm x 14 flute. There is also a web address for the manufactor at www.ctatools.com. Hope this helps.

[Service manual and maintenance]

Hi

As a first time Subaru owner and someone who works on their own cars I don't have any repair manuals for this car. Can someone give me an idea or web site where I can buy a service manual for a 2005 Forester. (other than Haynes or Chiltons)

Also other than fluid changes, what typical maintenance can I be expect to be needed for this car? Is there any problems or issues related to this vehicle?

Thanks to all who responded, it seems that I will check a few more auto parts stores before I go the screwdriver route. I have checked 3 but maybe they were out of the size I needed. This is the first filter change and I don't see a problem with this in the future cause I never over tighten the filter. I am aware of the larger size aftermarket filters, found out when I compaired it to the factory filter in the store.

I am a new member and a first time Subaru owner and I recentally purchased a 2005 Forester. I want to change the oil/filter but I'm having a problem finding a "cup wrench" to fit the filter. I bought the filter from a Subaru dealer #15208AA080, but when I asked about buying a filter wrench the counterman told me they don't sell them. In the past I have bought this item from other dealers as their wrench fits better than a generic one from the local auto parts. I couldn't even find one that comes close at any local store. So is there a correct wrench to find and where? How is this filter removed by others on this board? It seems pretty tight to use a strap or metal band wrench.
