Why do you want to use an EJ PS hose? You’ve got me curious.

If you’re doing an EJ converion the PS lines plug straight into the EA82 rack for RHD vehicles. I’d imagine it’s the same for LHD vehicles even though there’s a block to connect to.

Well, I tossed the EA82 PS pump before I checked to see if the existing lines would be compatible with the EJ22 PS pump. I found out that they aren't compatible. The hard line that ends the existing hose is to long to thread into the pump and the threads are different. When I have looked at EJ22 power steering lines they don't look to have the same configuration as the EA82 lines and since the threads on the pump side is different I'm guessing they are different on the hard line side.

you can buy a radiator on rock auto.

For the lines, I recently made my own hard line for the pressure line on my RX.  The fittings on the old line were M14x1.5 on both ends.  Amazon had an M14x1.5 to 6AN adapter and then I used the brainded teflon hose to make the line.  Worked great.

Thanks! I will look into the AN fittings and Rock Auto. Didn't think to look there, only checked my local auto parts stores.

  3. I have a 1986 GL wagon that I need to get rid of. It would make a great parts car.  The thing has been reworked and is missing much of its vacuum lines and has a carburetor off of something with an air cleaner from a f150 (I think). But the engine is mostly intact, missing the alternator and coil. (And no I didn't do most of the butchery). The glass is intact except for the cracked windshield and sunroof. I would also have a SPFI EA82 that I want to get rid of. I can get $300 for the GL from a scrap yard. Not sure what the EA82 is worth but I do know oil pumps are getting harder to come by as are other parts. I am in the Seattle area and would like to see these gone this weekend.

  4. I am looking a mechanic in the greater Seattle area that is reliable, good priced and honest that knows Subaru. I have an 1987 GL that I was going to put an EJ22 into it but have come to realize that hell is likely to freeze over before I get to it. But I am not giving up on the swap just doing it myself. So if anyone in the PNW knows a mechanic that they trust please let me know.

  5. I have been working on my 1987 GL off and on for a couple years. It was running and driving fine until one day it up and died. To make a very long story short I'll tell you what I have done and what I have discovered. It ran on occasion, without rhyme or reason, then would refuse to start again. When it would run it ran perfectly. I have checked fuel pump and pressure, MAF, SPFI, spark, spark plugs, coil, cap, rotor distributor, and timing. I have changed out the ignition switch and ECU. Nothing has worked. After doing more research and reading I found out that the ecu has an LED that should light up when power is getting to the ECU. I have just checked and the LED is dark when I try and crank the engine over.

Somy question is can anyone help me with tracing down power for my ECU? Please type slowly and use small words, when it comes to the mechanical issues of vehicles I'm fairly competent. Electrical is a different matter entirely. Electricity might ask well be magic, and DC the harder version of it.

Any help would be most appreciated.

  6. I have posted on here before about this car and this problem. I have new information and new developments.

Here is the history; my 1987 Subaru GL died on me, while driving, and wouldn't start again. Since then It has started on occasion but not easily and runs rough for a bit before smoothing out. When it does run there is no telling how long it will run for or if it will start again when its shut off. About 3 weeks ago it started and died shortly after only to start again and run and drive for over an hour, until I shut it off. The next day it wouldn't start again. I started looking at it again today and I was able to get it started with the help of some starter fluid but it wouldn't keep running without me constantly pumping the gas. After keeping it running for a few minutes there was smoke coming up through the handbrake housing. After shutting it down I looked underneath and the exhaust was glowing red from the manifold back to about the rear axles.

What I have done in the past is changed out the ignition switch, checked the distributor, coil, MAF, injector and fuel pressure. All have checked out good. With todays events I checked the spark plugs and found that they have excessive carbon deposits. So that in combination with the red hot exhaust, and hard to start makes me think that atleast one of the problems is rich air fuel mixture. I think this is controlled by the airflow meter. I will be checking this tomorrow.

    Anybody have any other suggestions?

  7. After A few years of not running, I just got my 86 GL wagon running. It wasn't getting any fuel or spark, so I put on new ignition module. Fired right up. The idle is pretty rough, and with any throttle input it gets rougher. I tried to check the timing but I'm not able to see the marks, at all when using the timing light. I bumped the engine over and was able to see them with regular light so I know they are somewhat visible.

I'm not sure what would make keep the marks from being visible (maybe my old eyes or weak strobe), but it does idle better without the vacuum advance hooked up to vacuum.

The ignition control module didn't come with a pickup, so I had to cut and wire in the old one. The module has a + and a -, but being unsure of what was what on the pickup, I took a guess. I could wire it the other way but am worried that it could damage the module (which was very hard to come by).

I also pulled each plug, and was able to see that each one was making spark.

Wondering if it might be a vacuum issue or something else. Any help would be appreciated. I'm just about had it with this and if I can't figure it out soon this GL is headed to subbie graveyard. Found the archives the very helpful in the past and thought I'd post about this problem.

  8. I'm pretty new to the world of Subarus and am glad to be here. I have a 85 GL with an EA82 from an 87(?) Loyale. The problem comes in when one of the previous owners started doing modifications. One of the modifications was to slap the largest carb on it that could be found.  I couldn't even tell you where the carb came from or what it is supposed to go to. What I would like to do is try and return it as close to modified stock as I can but I need to find an air intake assembly for it. I'm not particular about it being after market or used. Mainly want something that was designed for the EA82. I've done Google, Craigslist and ebay searches without much luck. Any suggestions?
