why, garygrossgary? if the transmission is replaced why the timing belt (I should have about thirty grand left on this belt).
Is there a reason of which I should be aware?

(99 OBW) just came out of transmission shop. May need a new front differential... However, $1500 (minimum) on a 208k vehicle, although it is the 30th Anniversary model (heated leather seats, 2 sun roofs, heated mirrors & stuff)... NEVER had any major repairs so:
a headgasket MAY happen (hasn't yet)
has a problem when I get gas & it takes a moment to start up again... & then drives & starts fine until the next fill up & then...
so...
what to do? what to do?

living out in the country we find mice to be nearly everywhere. Mouse traps would be full everyday & decided it was also attracting more/new mice... found cotton balls soaked with peppermint oil & kept in a small jar with holes in the lid, would prevent the mice from coming back in... this is based on the "mice don't see as well as smell for direction... so, interfere with that sense & the draw for them is gone.

check your VIN with a dealer but, based my current wife's 2002 Impreza... nope. Unless it's already set up for it.

I went through 3 alternators before buying the Subaru re-manufactured one... no problems since.

1999 OBW... 2.5 AT. 194k
Runs smoothly & fine except:
right after putting in gas (doen't need to be a full tank) it won't catch. Starts but as soon as I let off the gas pedal it stalls. This happens a few times (3-5) then it runs fine & continually start on first crank...Kind of like no fuel or no spark?
Any clues/hints/wisdom?

Is the security system after market... if so, your security system has shorted & is preventing the car from starting (a safety mechanism).... perhaps.

or you could buy it back from the insurance company... (a few hundred dollars) put on a new fender & a couple of doors (a few hundred dollars (depending on the wrecking yard/or parting out))... live with the dent in the back fender... good driver for "practically" free... (besides the other guy's insurance company should hand you a fine looking large check...)

depending on the model tire, I've never had tires last as long as Pirellis... I've had good luck with Michelins (but only as studless snow tires)

it would seem as though any Subaru specialist mechanic (or dealer mechanic) could identify by just looking...

the dealer can verify by your VIN...

or: go to the local Subaru dealer. get a remanufactured Subaru alternator for under $80, with a warranty...replacement is an easy job to do... (if it is your alternator... starter sounds very likely, though)

yeah, I forgot the entire routine but something about turning the key from off to on (not start) a certain number of times, locking/unlocking the door... find that routine... it's easy then.
an easy google search found this:
Programming or Overriding the Alarm
when you have lost the remote
Open driver's door.
Turn ignition key to 'On'
Press and *hold programming button* in
(see diagram, button under dashboard)
After 15 seconds the the door locks will
cycle 3 times. Do not release Programming button
Press lock (left) button the remotes to
be programmed. The door locks will cycle one time.
Exit programming mode by releasing Programming
button under dashboard and turning key to off.
Follow the directions... I don't think I'm coming over to your house to set this up, either. -
there's a routine to follow. I forget it but it's fairly easy to find on a good search engine. Easy to do, too. (also, there is a button hanging down from behind the dash that must be found)

I went through 2 "wrecking yard" alternators before I found out about the "rebuilt" deal at Subaru... no problems since. It's an easy job but, why do it 4 times?

done... the trick, it seems, is putting the little nuts back on... (although they did show up after a ride to the hardware store)

go to the dealer. tell the parts guy you want the rebuilt alternator for about $80 (or less)... this has been a problem & this was Subaru's resolution.... (it's a pretty easy replacement job)

1999 OBW... passenger side, 1/4 panel mount
any clues for removing this fixture without causing too much (or any) damage...
looks like lots of plastic buttons & a few small bolts
quite a few plastic buttons

or you popped a vacuum line...

I had trouble after I replaced wires & plugs. I was going to replace the wires because they were unknown brand... when I went to remove them I found that 2 of the wires were not seated properly... (seems like an issue with the design of "generic" wires...)... I reset the wires & all was well...

assuming it is a thousand dollar car
front axels
radiator flush (careful here this is a major headgasket culprit)
fender
door
so you spend another thousand (now you're at two thousand) for a thousand dollar vehicle... (& if the radiator flush leaves air in the line.... figure another $5 hundred IF you do most of the work (you won't be planing the heads, I'd guess)
