  1. Changed the clutch cable in my 98 outback sport. While under the dash I noticed a couple wires disconnected so I did what I thought made sense and connected them. Then things got crazy. Check engine light started flashing, pulled 8 codes and was wigging out. So I disconnected it and all is well but anyone know what these are for? Different model?
  2. okay I check all these out. I was hoping it was a vaccum line or something I forgot. Is it that 3 way vac or something else?
  3. I dont remember getting this code before I pulled the engine. Now I get a p0453 code and thats it. Evaporative emission control system. Could I have not hooked something up right when I put it back together. When I take the gas cap off a lot of pressure is released and I can hear a sort or gurgling noise coming from the tank. Sometimes that is enough to get rid of the code. Anyone know what it could be? 98 impreza ej22
  4. ahh gotcha. thanks! Im used to jeeps where you have to rotate it multiple times to get the pistons back in the right positions but that is a straight 6 vs a flat 4
  5. im saying, the cams have already been rotated multiple times with the belt off. really just the passenger side. to get the water pump out
  6. Your talking the 2 cam lines and the crank line? So once the belts off if one or both of the cams spin an unknown amount of times, as long as theyre lined up its all good?
  7. Replacing my timing belt. Its a 98 impreza outback sport with just a sohc. My big question right now is if the cam on say the passenger side spins 180 is it 180 off? Do I have to find tdc of one of the cylinders if the cams spin an unknown number of times? I was told never to turn it back to the left and now Im worried its all off. When I put it all together it seemed to line uo but when I hand spun it, it didnt feel like compression it felt like it was binding up. Any help?
  8. Thanks guys for all your help so far, the car should be on the road soon. Today I was throwing on some new suspension and I noticed a pretty steady drip coming from the driver side of the steering rack from a torn boot. Both sides have a torn boot. Im going to replace the rack but I was wondering what all racks might be interchangeable. I believe theres some pretty new subarus in my local jy. I have a 98 impreza outback sport btw. Thanks!
  9. yea its a 2.2. Took off the timing belt cover and everything seems to have been serviced not to long ago including the cam seals. no oil anywhere. Im thinking ill just replace the separation plate, valve cover gaskets and clutch and call it a day
  10. hmm thanks for the advice guys. Theres 3 pulleys correct? I was going to pull the timing cover and see if maybe its been serviced and see if the seals are leaking or not. I got the car for $700 with the bad clutch and havent really driven it at all. I just wanted to do some maintenance without throwing a ton of money at it. Its only had 2 previous owners so I would assume at some point its had some of this stuff addressed, hopefully. I might decided not to do heads until I deem them necessary. Pulling the motor wasnt difficult anyway.
  11. Have a 98 outback sport. Took the engine out to do the clutch. Since it's out I plan on doing the timing belt and valve gaskets. Would it be worth it to change the head gaskets? Its at 197,000 miles but shows no signs of issues. Just dont want to tear into something that might not ever give me a problem. Also, when you guys reseal the separation plate what do you normally use? There was oil everywhere. Cant tell if its also the rear main seal but would you recommend replacing that as well anyway?
  12. Its a cable clutch. Not sure if it has any hydraulic assistance but theres only a master cylinder under the hood. Well that I can find at least
  13. I didnt drive it far, just a few miles around a neighborhood to make sure I could find all gears. Didnt really get on it too hard but oh well, itll be a good car once I get it done.
  14. Hello all, new here and new to subarus. Recently got an older 98 impreza outback sport 5spd manual. When I went and test drove it the clutch worked fine. The link bushings were pretty much gone so there is a ton of play in the shifter but I could easily find all the gears and drive fine. So I pay the guy, do the title work and take the key. Had to go get a battery from my house to drive it home. Took a few hours to make it back out there and when I went to pick it up, funny thing happened all of a sudden the clutch was like gone. Reving up way high and getting to 10 mph and not moving much. Can smell the clutch burning too. So I had the car towed to my place because at that point the car was mine anyway. Would a clutch randomly go out like that or is there something possibly fixable? I know the guy didnt drive it when I left. My initial thought was the cylinder but it has a cable clutch. I have experience with the ej motors. Ive done head gaskets and timing belts so if I have to replace the clutch ill just pull the motor and do everything but just wondering what would make a clutch do that? Thanks for any help
