  1. Hello ladies and gentlemen. I'm trying to fix my horn right now and need a little advice.

The guy I bought the car from changed the steering wheel and did not properly hook up the clock spring to the steering wheel.

My question for you is that I know the yellow connector from the click spring is for the air bag (because I had to fix that ), but what is the white connecter for? Is that the horn connection? If so I should be able to fix this quick....if not, what is it?

I'm nervous to just jump the wires and test it out like a cowboy.

    Thanks for the help

  2. Well, I own an '09 impreza that's pretty much identical to yours. At 163,000km my head gasket went on the passengers side. Looks like it developed the problem from the combustion side.

As far as the oil consumption goes, I change my oil every 4500km and add 1 litre of oil in between every oil change since new.

I'm at 190,000 km, changed the head gaskets myself, swapped to fel-pro gaskets and arp head studs for peace of mind and ease of installation. Keep in mind I drive this car very aggressively...I mean it gets put to the floor every day I drive it which is a mix of hwy and city. I do a lot of maintenance to this car and don't abuse it through neglect, but treat it like a toy. All fluids are kept pretty much right at the full line.

I just had to change my transmission recently. 5mt...picked up a used one and all is good now. In its defence, I replaced my clutch when changing the headgaskets and the clutch had a defect. Something was wrong with the material and it shuddered badly after break in. It was replaced and it's smooth now but there was a period there where I was forced to drive the car to work like that until I got all the parts in order and made time to pull my engine to make the swap happen. It was really rough but likely led to the early demise of the transmission having a failed bearing in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. 1st and 5th were only ok.

I want to buy a new car but literally cannot convince myself to like anything other then what I have (except the sti of course). This is an awesome car and went with no major repairs until 163,000 km.

Even with these issues I've had, there is still no other car I'd rather drive.

Hopefully this is the info you were looking for.

  3. Hi there,

Battery drained and once I recharged and reconnected my battery the hazard lights won't shut off. It's not the switch behind the steering wheel. I can click it all day and it won't help.

This is for a 1999 impreza outback sport.

While the battery was disconnected I also took the dash instrument panel out to fiddle with some little light bulbs behind the gauges.

I've done some searches online and can't find a little button people talk about. I've tried disconnecting the battery and reconnecting meanwhile turning the key on, off, upside down, inside out......nothings working except disconnecting the relay or pulling the fuse.

I'm trying to get this car ready for a safety inspection and this is a huge step in the wrong direction

  4. Thanks for the help. I just put in a used transmission from lkq. I had 186,000 km on the car when it started to make the noise. I am actually still working on the swap now, 2/3's done since I've decided to do some control arm bushings and other little things....

Just for fun I checked the drain plug again...totally full of larger sized chips of metal...once I saw that it put my troubleshooting mind at ease.

Lkq is great, first time dealing with them.

My transmission sounded a lot like rod knock like you're talking about. Just barely starting to make noise in neutral, second gear was getting really bad though.

    Thanks again for the help.

  6. Well, I don't like to leave an open ended topic so here we go. Took my car to a shop today. They say it's a bearing causing problems. I did like to hear that they say subarus have top notch transmissions but followed that with the fact that I should just go to a parts recycling depot for a good used transmission. Likely my second gear has pitting and some of the other gears. If they replaced the bearings the gears may still not mesh as if they were new again...

So that's that, It's not worth fixing unless I figure out how to rebuild it myself....I sense another project.

  7. I'm thinking it may be input shafts related but originated wity something from the second gear.

I removed the flywheel to have it resurfaced and torqued the bolts to somewhere around 58 ft/lbs, and 12ft/lbs for the clutch. I've done that part a few times but I'm pretty sure it's not originating from the clutch only because of how specific it is with the gear selection.

I'm preparing to drop the transmission out, but first thing tomorrow I'm going to head to a transmission shop and see what they think first.

  8. Can't hear anything in neutral with the clutch engaged or disengaged, revved up or at idle.

There is a little vibration if I get up a little past normal highway speeds. It's been on and off like that this spring and summer. No problems shifting gears.

185,000km on the car and about 10,000km on the clutch. I replaced it when I changed the headgaskets.

I'll check on the bucking/jerking in a tight turn but I didn't notice anything when I did a u turn last night.

It doesn't seem to be affected by turning at all though. 2nd gear is by far the loudest for making the noise that sounds similar to a rod knocking. Very slight in 1st, 3rd, and 4th. Can't hear anything in 5th.

This sound only presented itself 1 week ago.

  9. Hello again,

Just working on my 99 impreza outback sport with the ej22 and am puzzled by the engine knock coming from the passenger side rear portion of the engine. Definitely seems to be at the timing of that piston but is silent at startup for 10 minutes, then develops once the engine is up to temp. The crank and rod bearings are brand new...

It's possible that the sound is coming from the cylinder head but I can't be certain.

These heads have the type of tappets that you just loosen a nut and tighten down with a screwdriver....I'm not sure if that helps but I know the hydraulic lifters can be noisy.

I'm not sure where to start...the short block was just rebuilt.

  10. Hello ladies and gentlemen,

A new problem has arisen from my '09 impreza with the ej25 n/a mated to the 5mt.

When going through the gears I noticed a little noise last week and now it cannot be ignored....

The noise cannot be missed while in second gear. It's a banging sound that stays in tune with the engine rpm but mostly while accelerating with the clutch fully engaged. It's barely noticeable in the other gears and seems to be silent in reverse and possibly not affecting 5th gear yet. From inside the car I thought at first it was rod know but it is definitely not coming from the engine.

I've narrowed it to either the clutch or something on the input side of the transmission. It's not the cv axles or driveshaft due to how the sound follows the engine rpm. It's a loud banging sound that's non existent while deceleration in gear, loud while accelerating, and almost gone but still audible while cruising.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

  11. Ok, so after searching for pictures online and taking in some of the info you folks have provided I'm going to go ahead and say; my car had a cruise switch installed in the dash by a previous owner, who just happened to not finish the job of setting up a cruise system. It's really nerve wracking to have a connector that's just sitting unplugged and hanging from the firewall...
