    Thanks for the suggestions. Turns out the issue was the shift cable broke.

    Thanks for the suggestions. I ran out of time and further diagnostic knowledge so I jumped the starter to get the car to a garage.

    2001 AT Forester L today while driving I tried to put the car in reverse. It would not shift to reverse. Now the car is locked in P, the ignition key will turn, all dash instruments light up, brake lights do come on with pedal depressed, car will not start. I can over ride P move shift to N, key will turn in ignition but car will not start
