  1. I changed my oil last week. While I was trying to get the filter off, I had to reach around behind the alternator with my left arm and jam it down in-between all the crap back there so I could hold the crappy filter wrench on the filter while I tried to take it off with my right hand. (The numb nuts who changed the oil filter last time tightened it down with the wrench, so I had to resort to a screw driver into the filter to get it off.)

     

    Now my battery won't charge, and the charge light on my dash is on, as well as my parking brake light will only dim after I take the parking brake off. Any suggestions on what wire I may have broken off, or how to fix this? I can't afford to take it to a shop and say "I'm having electrical issues, can you find it?"

     

    The car is a 1990 Justy, 5-speed, carb, with A/C crap in the way.

  2. They are good little cars. Great on gas, and simple to park. The valve cover gasket leaks as if it was designed to, but a bit of Red RTV will fix that. Do avoid the AT unless you are willing to put a 5-speed in when it Dies. They make very good run-abouts, but you feel every bump in the road.

  3. Update for thoes who care.

     

    It took me 4 hours to do, but most of that time was spent cleaning the oil that had acumulated inside the cover. Not sure yet if the oil is there because my front main is going, or the valve cover gasket leak that seams standard on a justy was the cause.

     

    Some things I learned:

     

    1. You don't need the wrench to get the pulley wheel off, all you need to do is get a good ratchet with a 17mm socket on it, rest the wrench on the engine mount and turn the car over. works like a charm. Don't forget to put the socket on the nut.

     

    2. The dip stick is going to be in the way. The bolt that holds it on is longer than the clearence between the motor mount and the block, and it will leak coolent.

     

    3. The top bolts (3 of them I think) that hold the cover on have a nut and washer on the other side that WILL fall off if you don't pay attention. Have a magnet probe.

  4. I'm a novice at best when it comes to doing car repairs, and the other day I broke a timing belt on my 90 Justy. I have read the Chilton 10 times over, and think I know what to do. However, I know from experience that when I think I know what I'm doing I really don't have a clue.

     

    The questions I have are:

     

    1. Do I need the crankshaft pulley wrench, or can I get the pulley off without damaging it without the tool?

     

    2. When I'm aligning the timing marks, what should I turn first, and what way should I turn it??

     

    3. What major pitfalls should I be looking out for? Remember, engines and how the mechanics work are NOT second nature to me.

     

    Hopefully, somebody has the time and inclination to help answer my questions.

  5. Probably the engine internals are sufficiently the same between carb and FI motors. I would recommend either (1) install the whole carbed long block, but use the MPFI equipment and pitch the carb stuff: or (2) if the carbed head is not compatible with the MPFI intake manifold, then use the MPFI head on the carbed short block.

     

    Man-hours should be one day at most for the two of you. Line up all parts beforehand (like head gasket if swapping heads), and do whatever you can by yourself before your friend gets there to speed things up: drain oil and coolant, disconnect battery, lots of little stuff you can take off beforehand. The night before, spray PB Blaster on all bolts you will be loosening. When you reassemble, use anti-seize paste on the threads.

     

    Keep spare motor, or at least the head if it's compatible, for spare parts or rebuilding.

     

    Thank you. Is there anything special I need to do with the computer, or do I just apply the standard modifications to the 91 ECVT computer for the 5-speed?

  6. I just picked up a doner 90 carburated justy with a 5-speed so I could swap out the ECVT in my 91 MPFI with the 5-speed. Turns out the engine in the 1990 is in much better shape than the one in my 1991. So I'd like to just swap out the engine's and tranny's because my 1991's body is in better conditon. I'd like to keep the carb/engine/5-speed from the 90 in one unit, and the MPFI/engine/ECVT from the 91 in one unit.

     

    Questions are:

     

    1. Is it going to save me work to do it this way, or make more?

     

    2. What do I need to do with the computer in the 91 reguarding the change from a auto to a 5-speed and the MPFI to carb?

     

    3. What kind of man hours can I expect with One experenced person to guide and one person who know's how to use tools to do it?

     

    4. Any well earned experence anybody can pass on reguarding this task?

  7. Finally got some free time to change the fuel filter. But I'm stuck again. The hoses just wont let go of the old fuel filter. It's like the plastic has bonded to the filter or something. And if I should get them off, getting them onto the new filter seems even worse. Is there any trick to it, like heating them with some warm water?

    I had the same thing happen to me, and the best thing in the world is drip a little bit of gas or zippo lighter fluid on it, then twist. other than my first thought of heating it with a ligher... would have read about it on the darwin awards :)

  8. Hi, I'm new to this place. My family has had a subaru of one type or another all my life, ( I learned to drive on an '84 brat when I was 7 ). My dad even put a ea82 in a Kit Fox. I got a 91 Justy, 4wd ECVT here in Seattle last December and it needs some love.

     

    Is there an after market maker for the brushes? or am I stuck paying $100 from the dealership?

     

    Also, in a few months I'm want to swap the AT out for a standard (when I can afford the downtime I'm know I'm going to have while I figure the whole thing out). Any experence that others have to share about how to find a good deal on the tranny and drive line?
