  1. '82 subaru gl wagon. was wondering, i removed ac compressor, ac hoses, small ac coil in front of radiator. dont have any overheating issues, just decided to get rid of all that stuff. my question is...can i go under the passenger side dash and remove all those black boxes such as blower and heater core, and whatever else? not gonna use ac or heater, just open windows and vents. is it possible? will it effect my coolant temp or start giving me issues? please let me know. thanks in advance

  2. hello from texas, i havent been on here in a long time, since i sold my '86 subaru gl wagon. today i was "given" an '83 subaru wagon, (yellow) 4 door. havent reall checked to see if its a gl or whatever, an old freind of mine decided to get rid of it and thought of me. he let me have it for FREE! anyway she runs, a little rough on the idle while at stops, but she ran pretty good, temp and voltage is good as well. what are some things i can do to improve the idle and shifting, (some grinding)? tires are new, no stereo, interior a little shot. most of all i really NEED front corner marker lights and rear tail lights. well let me know what you think guys. thanks :-\

  3. the reason i'm thinking of switching from an EA82 to a EA81 is because the timing belt broke while driving on the hiway. took her to the mechanic, he says that aside from the belt being broke, the tensioner broke as well. he called several parts stores, and they sell a "kit" which comes with a belt, tensioner, and pulley, and a few more minor pcs. all for the grand total of $270.00! (plus they have to order the kit) so after all is said and done, he 's gonna charge me approx. $600.00 parts and labor! and that doesnt include the fact that he still has to see if any valves are bent or any further damage. at least, he told me before he actually did anything to it. he even told me to think about it, because of how much money i wanted to put into it. anyway, theres this guy who has an '84 subaru selling for parts. he wants $250.00 for the engine (hence EA81) so question is....do i do it?:-\ let me know what u guys think. by the way thanks for all your responses. i will definately take all of that info into consideration if i decide to do the swap. thanks again!

  4. yeah she has been running ruff, and i feel bad cuz this soobie used to run really nice. so far i'm just happy that she turns over and stays on, (pretty good idle) and she gets me to work and back. my son is using our other car. so most definately gonna do the timing belt thing this weekend, she deserves it! i did see that write up on the timing belt and it's pretty awesome. i will also get back to you guys and let you know what i found and what i did. one more thing....is it okay to use seafoam in her now, or just wait till all is said and done? once again, you guys are the best! thanks:)

  5. thanks for all the repllies! really happy that it "might" be the timing belt. :banana:didnt know she had 2 timing belts. it does make sense that it mite be the passenger side. i know for a fact that these timing belts have never been changed in at least 7 years. i did the coolant change and oil change and there was no coolant in the oil or vise versa. so definately gonna look under those covers this weekend! quik question.... is it ok to drive her to and from work like that? and next, do i need to take out the radiator and stuff to get to the timing belt covers?? thanks again guys for all your help. really appreciate it!

  6. i have an '86 soobie gl wagon 5 spd. 1.8 front wheel drive. i just got her back from a friend who had her sitting for a month or so, and i changed out the spark plugs, ngk's disty, rotor, fuel filter, fuel pump, oil/filter change, coolant flush n fill. anyhoo after getting her running she's riding a little ruff, took her to a mechanic/friend who said thats she's only running on 2 pistons, something bout the head gasket to the passenger side. does anyone know if there's a write up (with pics:banana:) on this kinda job? i wanna try and tackle this so i can save myself some $$ and learn more. i love my soobie and i eventually want to get a lift and roof rack. thanks in advance guys!

  7. hi, after almost 2 years it looks like i'm coming back to the "soobie" world! back then i had an '86 subaru gl wagon 5 spd. just like alot of those burgundy LOYALE wagons u see here. i absolutely loved it, but i sold it to a friend who needed a "ride" desperately, and he and his family had fallen on really hard times. well he's now back on his feet and doing really well, and offered to sell me back the soobie for $200. i was estatic because i missed her so bad and i had been wanting another car for a daily driver. i should get her back next week just in time for xmas! she still the same she was when i parted with her only now she has new tires, new starter, and a new carb. not too shabby. he did mention that he thinks she need a tuneup, timing lite especially. well after all that, i decided to come back and visit my favotite soobie site, this one! and it's changed.... wheres all the pictures, all the great posts, the usual guys,(miles fox) the great "masters"????? no offense to anyone, i know that there are alot of good guys here and alot of pros, i just mean that this place seemed to have alot of....stuff!:slobber: well anyway, it's good to be back with my subaru brothers and hope we can all grow closer and learn alot from each other as we head into this new year! :headbang: laterz guys

  8. JUST CURIOUS..IS ANYONE HERE FROM OHIO (MAINLY...COLUMBUS) I WILL BE DRIVING UP THERE IN SEPT. TO TAKE MY SON TO MOVE IN AS A FRESHMAN TO "THE UNIVERSITY OF OHIO"! I'M REALLY PROUD OF HIM. I WAS JUST WONDERING IF THERE WERE ANY SOOBIE MANIACS OUT THERE, SINCE HERE IN TEXAS WE SEEM TO BE LACKING IN THAT DEPT. BY THE WAY IF THERE ARE ANY SOOBIE MANIACS IN THAT AREA OR POINTS IN BETWEEN ARKANSAS, MEMHIS TENN THRU KENTUCKY UP TO OHIO. MAYBE U COULD GIVE ME SOME TIPS AS FAR AS GOOD JUNKYARD, FREEBIES, PARTS GIVE-AWAY FROM OWNERS WHO WANT TO GET RID OF STUFF. I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT, THANKS...BAGGYSHORTS:headbang:

  9. :eek:have an '86 soobie gl 5 spd wagon, until recently she was running fine, then somewhere in the middle of driving around town, she just started dropping in the tach/idle...then turned off. she started right up but wont stay on (unless i play with gas pedal) and i keep her idling and once the light turns green, i give her gas and off we go. but if have to stop or slow down or downshift, and let the foot off the gas as a normal driver. she'll die. then we do it all over again. what can it be??? can some of you soobie wizards point me in the right direction, or where or what can i do or check out? she's not turbo, just a simple carb. nothing fancy shmansy about her. thanks guys. baggyshorts ur the best!:headbang:

  10. vehicle info.

    auto, manual?

    fwd, awd?

    diff or trans?

sorry....it's a '86 soobie GL wagon, 5 spd. 207,285 miles on her, and i dont know if this makes a difference or not but i live in a area thats very hot most of the year. (just thought i'd mention that cuz someone had said that there are different oils for different climates, thanks again for all ur help, baggyshorts
  11. just wanted to thank...scrap487, subarian, jerry demoss, & boosted balls, for all ur hep and imput and quick response. i'm gonna go with the gear oil change first and see what happens. i've had the wagon for bout 6 yrs. and i never changed it and i dont know if the previous owner ever did it or not. and she has 207,285 miles on her so maybe a change would do her good. by the way when i do change that oil, what kind, and how many bottles or quarts, and where is the drain plug located? thanks again guys. 12. just wanted to say thanks to...scrap487, subarian, jerry demoss, & boosted balls. for all ur imput and quick response. i think i'll go with changing the gear oil, because ever since i've had the soobie, i know i havent done it and who knows if the previous owner ever did it. the wagon runs great, had 207,285 miles on her, and that wheezy sound isnt that bad, but i do notice it. let me try that and i'll let u know if i have any further question. once again guys thanks. everyone here is just the best. 13. Where is it coming from? Is it only when you push in the

clutch? If so, I would think of the throw-out bearing first.

u know i think it might just be when i do push in the clutch or as i'm about to shift. so if it the throw out bearing....what do i do to replace it, and is it expensive? can it be replaced by a junkyard part? and it is hard to do?? thanks, by the way...how long can i drive it before something if anything happens?
  14. mine either...when I had mine (before it stopped working  ), I literally had it velcro'd to the dash above the heat controls. and ran the wires out from behind the clock.

    I'll look for a pic

thanks for the reply guys. i really want to install this puppy in my soobie but i'd like to get an idea on how u and other soobie owners went about installing urs in, radio, antenna and all. pics would help. thanks again ....baggyshorts
