    This was the "missing link". I had to change the oil pressure ring in cylinder nr 2 at 135 000 km. Strange, all the other cylinders are OK.

    A is the uppermiddle bolt. B is lowermiddle. C is upperfront and D is lower front. Eis upper rear and F is lower rear. The first four steps are in alphabetical sequence.

     

    1.Tighten all bolts to 22 ft-lbs.

    2. Tighten all bolts to 51 ft-lbs.

    3 Back off all bolts by 180 degrees.

    4.Back off all bolts by 180 degrees again.

    5.Tighten bolts A and B to 25 Ft lbs.

    6.Tighten bolts c,d,e and f to 11 ft-lbs.

    7.Tighten all bolts by 80 to 90 degrees, alphabetically.

    8. Repeat step 7.

    Use only genuine Subaru headgaskets, they've been redesigned several times, and it appears they finally got it right (I hope). Best prices are at 1stsubaruparts.com, excellent service, too. I just got $400 in parts from them in preparation for changing my headgaskets. Now I just need some time to do the work.

    Here is a request for help from Norway, so therefore excuse the strange English. I have driven 7 different Subs for the last 20 years and many thousands kilometers and I love those cars. Perfect for the Norwegian long snowy winters and the reliability has been outstanding. I have a VW beetle, which I am familiar with every nuts and bolts in, but my subs have run without any need of help from me so I hardly now where the engine is :) But now I need to find it. When I bought my 1999 model Legacy GX (in Norway it is the new Legacy) with an EJ 251 engine I found out that it used lots of oil. It is cylinder nr 1 who have problems. The spark plug is filled with dirt and coke after few kilometers. So now I want to take the engine apart and see if can fix it. I need some advice for this. Have some one a description, pictures or good advices for this work.
