  1. Thank you for info! I've previously read that first thread about the Ej22 MAP engines and was considering following exactly what he did. Wrx ecu swap is something I'll be doing some thinking about.... I've had several people swear that I'm going to blow my engine if I don't tune it. (None of which have any experience with this) Although I have a lot of faith in my engine, I still can't help but worry that I'll only have boost for a few weeks before it detonates. On another note, Anyone know where I could find a solid ej22 shortblock for a decent price?
  2. Okay so I've heard conflicting things about boosting on stock ecu. Much of what I've read has actually said that it's safe as long as you keep the boost low. If I run around 5psi I think I'll just leave my computer the way it is. (My car uses a Map system) On the other hand, I would like to push as much power as I can safely. That's why I have been thinking about putting in a stand alone. Not sure where I've heard it but I think I've read that my car doesn't like piggybacks elsewhere too. The problem that I have with boosting on stock ECU is that I cannot find reliable specs on this turbo. I would very much prefer to use the internal wastegate rather than buying an external one. I've read some about the actuator being 5-6psi but others say it's 10 or 13.5psi. I do plan on testing it myself with a hand pump, just haven't gotten around to it yet. Any idea what kind of longevity I'd be getting out a that kind of setup? I've got nearly 150k on my motor. I do have another ej22 with a spun rod bearing. Got a good parts car for 400 bucks! I was considering building this one. Possibly swapping the rotating assembly with one from an ej22t. That or just fixing it with stock components and doing a head swap. Thoughts?
  3. So I'm in the process of piecing together all the components I need to turbo my 99 Impreza Wagon with an ej22. So far I've got: Td04-13t turbo 03 Wrx Intercooler/BOV Wrx Up-pipe (unknown year) Wrx Fuel pump Oil sump Spare single port headers I will be modifying What I still need is a downpipe and full turbo exhaust, injectors, and most importantly... A good ecu! Does anyone have experience with a N/A turbo build? Recommendations? Piggyback or standalone? What's a good, affordable, and easy to install ECU? Note: I plan on boosting around 7-8psi with a good tune. I know my engine has a high CR but I don't think that amount of boost should be an issue. Any input would be appreciated!
  4. Thanks for the replies everyone, and Merry Christmas! I've mainly been thinking of turboing my stock engine. The ej22t part was just a random bit of info I was throwing in lol. I just know they're pretty rare, and I've heard they're beasts when I comes to boost. Just wanted your opinions on it! As far as the heads goes I think you guys have answered my question. I guess my good old single port will just have to work!
  5. Hey numbchux ya still there? I'm tried accepting the fact that my isn't fast and uhhhh.. Not working so well haha I've been doing a lot of thinking about turboing my stock engine as opposed to swapping. I found someone who is parting out a Phase II ej25 and I think I could get the heads for about $200. The dude says that they have new valves (skeptical about that). I found the turbo exhaust from a wrx on ebay for $96. http://www.ebay.com/itm/131952996457 Do you think this be a better set up than trying to fabricate an exhaust for my stock engine? I do want to yield more power, but I also want my motor to stay just as strong as it is. Also, I FOUND SOMEONE SELLING A 91 LEGACY GT WITH AN EJ22T FOR ONLY 500!! I've heard good things about the closed deck on that block and they're impossible to find on ebay.. Only reason I haven't jumped on that is because I'm not exactly sure how that would work, putting a pre-obd2 engine in my car??
  6. Hmmm. Maybe I'll just appreciate the reliability of my car and use it as a good daily driver, and get a wrx as a toy haha. Can't ever go wrong with having more than one subi. Little off topic, but my friend was saying that I could flash tune my ecu to get more hp and torque, but I can't really see that making any noticeable difference on a N/A engine.. Are there any other engine mods I could do to make a bit more power, or is my car just gonna be slow without forced induction?
  7. Thanks for the replies, So I'm willing to spend about 2-3k to make this car perform the way I want it, and I don't expect anything over 250hp. I know it would be easier all around to just buy a wrx, but I really like this car, and intend on having it for a long time. I saw a guy swap in a h6 from a SVX, and I like the idea of having more power that's naturally aspirated. But I would like to do this project with as little fabrication as possible. As for turbo'ing my engine, that seemed like as much, if not more work than swapping in another engine. I know I would need heads from 2.5 series engine, for their dual port exhaust. All the exhaust components. A good turbo and intercooler. And better injectors. But that's the extent of my knowledge. What else would need to be done to turbo my stock little ej22? Could that potentially make more power than an ej20?
  8. I know that an ej20 engine from the same year would definitely work, but I want to know what other years would work with my transmission. I'd assume that the newer engines make more power and are better. Any suggestions?
  9. I have a 99 Impreza L Wagon and I want to make this car not quite so slow. My transmission (5MT) has been rebuilt, and I put in a new center differential as well. So if it all possible, I would like to keep this tranny because I already have a lot of money into it. Ive been looking at used turbo motors on ebay and I want to know, what would be the best engine that will mate to my transmission? I apologize if this is a dumb question, but I want to be sure before I buy an engine.
