  1. Ok, I got the car running again....., looks like the timing belt was still off a tooth.........

But something new has come up.....

I took it for a test drive, and it ran great, had spark knock like crazy though.

I got with the lady that owns it now, and we went and put fresh gas in it(it had sat for several months), but on the way home from the gas station, the car started jerking backwards and fowards. We pulled over, I started driving, and it ran fine.

I think that the old gas is what is causing it to run off periodically, any other ideas???????????

    Thanks

  2. I put the middle of the three marks on the pointer, had the drivers side cam mark straight up, and the passenger side straight down(there are no belt covers at all, they broke when I put belts on it when I first bought it several years ago). I'll double check that again when I have better light and can get back to the car.

    Thanks

  3. I don't post much, but lurk quite a bit. I've managed to find lots of good tips for keeping my wife's '93 Loyal running good, so thanks in advance for any ideas....

    Here is the story........

I sold a friend of mine my 1992 Loyal a few months ago and it had been running great. She broke a timing belt on the way to work and had it towed home. I put new timing belts on it, and now it has no power.......

It will start easily, idle good, but once you give it gas it tries to die then revs slowly. It occasionally will backfire if you get it up to around 3500rpm....

I've double checked the belts, one was off a tooth so I fixed that, but it runs no different.......

There is around 150k on the car, it has 150 to 160 pounds of compression on all cylinders, and was fully tuned up less than 15k ago, and has no check engine light on....., now I'm stumped:-\

  4. Yep, when you compare the suby to a small block it does look weird.....

The valve cover gaskets are not all that difficult to replace, I've done them(and head gaskets) with the motor in the car, it makes life easier if you jack up one side of the motor(I forget which), just make sure you change the cam seals at the same time, or you will be back in there shortly doing them too.........

If I remember right, you can do the oil pan gasket without jacking on the motor, when these motors get major leaks, I usually pull them and change all of the gasket/seals, it is the simplest way to change the rear crank seal and/or clutch too.

Gauges......., take your pick, none are any more difficult to hook up on an ea82 than on a small block chev.

    2 cats???????????????

All of the subies I have here have one cat(there are 5 wagons here), sounds like you have something weird.....

First off my dl rocks. dont need all that glam gl sh*t lol

Anyways new to subys took a look under my wagon today. Holy sh$t weird looking (usually works on small block chevys) anyways it looks like it drove a oil spill. It apears to be leaking from the valve cover gaskets and the oil pan gasket. Now again im new to subarus so i have no idea how hard it is to change these out. I was tempeted to use that seafoam stuff on the crankcase but after seeing that im afraid of turning a small leak into a huge one. Not that this is my biggest concern but i like keeping matienced vehicles.

Also if i were to get some aftermarked gauges so i can monitor engine temps what would be a good one and are they relatively simple to hook up on a fuel injected vehicle.

And finally this is not a high performance vehicle but what the hell is up with the 2 catalytic converters. Can i get rid of one, can i run a modified dual exhaust setup or will that kill the backrpressure on my vehicle. again i just like messin with cars not lookin to be ultra cool just maybe try to squeeze more then 88 ponys out of this thing

  5. I'll give you a "better best" option...

My '92 Loyal left me stranded Thursday afternoon(on the way for my fiancee and I to get our wedding license) because the crankshaft pully bolt left us(while the engine was turning over 5k rpm). My dash lit up and the temp. gauge started climbing.

We ended up waiting about 2 hrs for a friend to bring be a spare bolt I had(I do have three parts cars........) and it was a 5 minute fix.

Look to see if the crankshaft pully is where it is supposed to be(you will know what I mean if it isn't), and go from there..........

OK...., before I get a lot of BS about the crankshaft bolt, I changed the timing belts about 6 months ago, and the last time I checked(aobut 2 weeks ago), everything under the hood looked good..........

  6. It depends upon what you are looking for......

If you are looking for best tire wear, start around 32psi and watch for wear, and rotate the tires regularly.

If you are looking for the best handling, there are lots of possibilities. Sport Compact Car did an article on that several years ago. If you really need to know, I use the basics on my car and my motorcycle.

  7. These are slightly different cars, but I've had my fiancee's '93 Loyal(4wd 5sp) at 90mph, as fast as it would go on flat ground, my sold(and now reowned) '88 GL would pull past 90mph, but I ran out of guts. My '92 Loyal(2wd auto) has pushed 100mph and was still pulling, but I've been tinkering with it........

  8. Sounds like it is time to go through the wire harness.......

Looks like you've checked for a locked compressor and fan malfunction.........

Unless there is trash trapped between the condenser and radiator(I've had this happen, but not on a sube), this may be your fix, outside of adding a seperate temp. gauge....

    '92Loyal 2wd

    '93Loyal 4X4(my fiancee's)

  9. With my 88'gl, I got about 25mpg on my commute.

I get about 25 with my '92 Loyal on my commute(about 20 miles each way), and I got 28-30mpg on my trip to Atlanta last weekend with a spare tire and gas can on the roof rack.

My fiancee's 93 Loyal(5spd, 4x4) was getting 27mpg no matter what we did, but it seems to be dropping lately, I need to see if we need a new motor........

  10. If you are talking about the front, you have to screw it back in. There is a "special" tool for that, or if you are brave, you can use needle nose pliers(just don't yell at me when they slip and........."

On the rear, I don't know, I haven't put the rear disks on my wagon yet.....

    '92 Loyal 2wd

    '93 Loyal 4wd

  11. Lets see....., I replaced the oil pan gasket, rear main, valve cover gaskets, the front seals and o rings on the cams, front crank seal, and intake gaskets(long story).

I know that it doesn't leak much oil under 70 because on my fiancee's daily route, the car rarely gets to 70mph and it might use a quart every 1000 miles or so.

I'll try the paper idea this weekend and see what I find.

    Thanks All

    Don

  12. My fiancee has an '93 Loyal 4x4 wagon, and it has many of the problems that come with a car over 170K miles. I'm working on the suspension noises(still handles fairly well, but they are so anoying), but I'm stumped on the oil leak it has. We replaced all of the seals and gaskets last year, but when you run it over 70mph for any length of time, it starts to leak oil. It falls on the engine crossmemember and then onto the cat, so we have lots of smoke and a bad stench when we have to stop. It looses about 1.5 qts on a tank of gas when I drive it on the interstate(well over 70 hehehe). I've tried washing the engine and crossmemember to try and track it down, but I've had no luck in getting closer.......

    Any Ideas?????

    Don
