Can someone explain to me this: Is a Subaru RX a pretty rare vehicle. I live in Tennessee and I NEVER see one out on the highway. And I live ten minutes from the biggest Subaru dealer in the state.

The connections for a tape deck and CD deck should be similar if they are both aftermarket.
Metra makes the dash adapters, you might find that both stereo installations had used the Metra wiring kit as well, in which case your task is simple.
Be sure not to blow fuses.

If the kit is made to fit a 4wd EA82 Sedan, it will fit the RX Sedan; if for a Coupe, it should fit an RX Coupe.
Wagons have different suspension bits in back, though.

1100 sounds like a good deal if it's in good shape.
Look for rust, leaks and proper operation of everything, transmission solid, suspension etc. And rust.

go for the XT6, they are much harder to find and engine is not much more complicated than the 4-cylinders from what I understand.

The moldings clip on at several points per piece. You should be able to pry them off, though you'll probably want to fill the small holes in the body where the molding clips used to be.

So, how many people besides me have made deposits on wheels? I'm curious which discount bracket we will fall into.

I got better mileage on a stock carb'd EA82 wagon (30mpg city/highway loaded down) than I get in my MPFI turbo sedan (25 or 26mpg city/highway).
If you want more power I always hear about Webers...

Most of us go to junkyards or have entire parts cars sitting around... no junkyards near where you live? what model of soob do you have?

I'd suggest cold calling a number of shops, both local and chains... get quotes from all of them, then you should have a good idea of prices in your area.
It shouldn't be more than a few hours of labor?

just got me through my first CV axle/half shaft swap.
This morning, the RX shuddered and clicked its way around town... on tonight's test drive/burrito run, it glided (okay maybe not, but it felt like it!!)
I'm sorta embarassed to say how long the job took me, but long story short I really only had to undo the inside bolt on the control arm, and the 3 nuts on the strut tower, and the e-brake cable bracket, in order to get the axles out/in.
Most fun moment was breaking the castle nut loose - without a breaker bar, just a 1/2" Craftsman socket wrench and a 36mm socket, I had a hard time for a while, even standing on the wrench didn't do it (too skinny). I thought, "how can I make myself heavier?" and eventually got the idea to hold a floor jack (in its carrying case) far out in one hand while I stood on the wrench, this acted to put a lot more torque on the nut and it broke free.

I have Chilton's and Haynes and at different times one will have good info that the other does not; also they have different photos, supplementary info and such, so it would be a good idea to have both.

I too have a JDM engine in my RX, it doesn't burn oil like the blown mill it replaced...
Perfectly ok for the money, I think it was $795 or so through a shop.
Now, the accessories from your old engine, that's where you've got to watch out !

Definitely use the Metra adapter plate, and replace your stock speakers if you want to hear anything at all. I only did the rears, so the fronts are drowned out almost entirely. New speakers are about 10x better than the OEM ones.
I didn't have any problems with the common ground/shared ground setup, your mileage may vary. I have all 4 speakers working off the new head unit.
