does a sweeping turn left sound different than a turn right? Some folks report the bad bearing sounds worse when it's on the outside of a turn.
Nope, pretty consistantly tied to wheel rotation, although I've had bearings on other cars behave in the manner that you describe. It has to be either the diff or bearing--I hope it's only the bearings, the car only has 56k.
This one might be a job for the dealer as I don't have a lot of time to mess w. it right now. Sounds like rear bearings are a general issue on this vintage vehicle though.
Thanks!

Look under the car, is the rear differntial case wet ?
If it was a wheel bearing, the tire shop should have picked up on it... just a thought.
Diff case is dry--no sign of leakage....yeah, I'm suprised the tire guys didn't catch the bearing (if that is what is its)

Have an issue w. my 01 Forrester. I was getting what I thought was a lot of road noise from my tires (mc radials put on by the PO that were about shot), so I took the plunge and got some new rubber--minimal change.
The sound from the rear, increases (sort of like growl of an off-road tire) w. wheel rotation speed. I'm now suspecting wheel bearing--altough this sounds like no other bearing I've ever heard.
Is this a known issue w. the Forrester (56k on the clock)? Simple fix?
Please advise,
Thanks in advance

As I stated..Right by the Rear Spray nozzle....in the top of the tailgate.
Found it, cleared it, works like a champ (but for how much longer??)
Thanks!

avk:
Good to know, and I checked it out. There seems to be no binding or flattening in the hose as it comes out of the rear gate, and the hose still has it's flexibility. I may however splice in some vaccuum tubing to keep this from being a problem.
ferret:
I'll check this one out, this type of thing was a pretty common issue on a car I owned some years ago (700 series Volvo). Most folks just kept a small supply of valves on the shelf at home and replaced them when they did a tune-up. How far downstream from the pump is the valve?
Thanks guys!

Stupid question follows:
Recently and for no apparent reason, the rear window sprayer on my new-to-me 01 Forester has stopped working. Caveats:
1. The pump still works (it makes noise at least)
2. I can feel movement in the hose when the pump is run--I don't feel pressure per se though.
3. Fluid is above the intake level for the rear sprayer.
The fluid ran a little low, and I'm suspecting that I just have a big-ol air bubble in the system? Is this common? Or is there some other piece of plumbing I need to check?
Thanks in advance,
Eric

The web site states that it will NOT work on 1996-2000 Subarus.

Since the vehicle in question is an '02, shouldn't be a big deal, but yeah, I agree, it seems a little goofy. For giggles I should try it on my 98 Legacy and see what happens.

Wouldn't this be covered by either the emissions or power train warranty?
Depends on what the fault code is. Might also be worthwhile to check w. Alldata to see if there are any known issues/recalls that might be related to the light (get the code first tho).

Welcome to the forum.
You can purchase a scanner from a parts store or go to a place like Autozone that will check them for free.
tool works pretty well, it's self contained and not terribly expensive.

The plastic shield underneath my Legacy's engine/gearbox is breaking apart. A while back, someone posted the URL for a company selling aluminum shields for Subarus(and other makes, too, I think). I did a search here but couldn't find it. Can anyone steer me to that URL?
SSI has them on sale right now.....

Got my "new-to-me" 01 Forester home from the dealer on Friday, and by Sunday the CEL had come on (had a little engine stutter releasing the clutch on Sun AM, light came on after that).
Hope this doesn't turn out to be too big a pain in the rear....

Cheers to everyone who said "wheelbearing". The right rear was shot, had it cleaned up under warranty. It's nice to have a quiet car again.
