  1. I guess today was my lucky day, I pulled up the pick n pull website did the usual search. A 1990 Legacy Wagon came in with matching specs to my car, so I go there and sure enough the part I need. I pulled it out and took it home and installed (after cleaning and lubing). I have a working speedometer again.

There is a lot to be said about how advanced Subaru was back in the day, the legacy I pulled the part out of was the top of the line trim I imagine, even with electronically adjustable height.

Thanks for the help everyone, I will be able to use the resources in the future I am sure.

Order a new adapter from Subaru. Very common failure.

I wouldn't trust a used one. Most of them look pretty beat to he11.

Yes this is exactly the one I need however as I mentioned in the first post Subaru is out of stock and the Amazon link it says currently unavailable. Ideally I will find a new one somewhere.

This has been a persistent problem with my '99 OBW for years.  Every time I stopped and got out (after driving for a while) I'd get hit with that burning rubber smell.  Couldn't figure it out, drove me nuts.

Eventually I sussed that it was a leaky PS reservoir/pump that was pooling some fluid on the top of the block.  Once the block heated, it'd begin to smell.

I had this issue as well leaking out of the rack / pinion seals as it dripped when I was driving the wind pushed it back onto the exhaust. I just used to Power steering stop leak and it immediately fixed the problem.

  4. Good afternoon everyone, first of all I'll just hi. This is my first post here and I look forward to being able to help people and also soak of some of this knowledge for myself. Now to the business end of things haha.

    I have a 1997 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport 2.2L / Automatic Transmission.

The speedometer recently stopped working and it gave me some codes P0500 and P1540 (which is specific to speed sensor 2 - passenger side of the from differential just in front of the dip stick). Also out the car into limp mode and the things that come with that.

I did research online, I also have the workshop manuals and 9/10 times the speedometer cable meter seizes and the end snaps off (or it shears off for some other reason). You'll see in the photo it was running dry and quite gouged.

Sure enough I pull it out and the end is snapped off and still in its place, turns out it's not magnetic so fun times getting that out.

I got the small piece out and inspected the actual meter itself and tried to turn with a screw driver and no go.

I turned the speedometer cable and it turned just fine. So my conclusion is the high pitched sound I heard coming from the front end that I wasn't able to diagnose for the last month was this pice haha...

Ill attach some photos that match my commentary.

With all the being said, where can a guy find this part ?Part# 737411752 / part code 37410B which is the mechanical version. The bottom side slots down into the differential and the top is where the speedometer cable clips into.

I called Subaru and was told it's been discontinued for awhile and no parts available in North America, I also emailed a few Japanese sites and same thing no stock.

I think I'll just have to wait for pick n pull to get a compatible vehicle in for me to pull one out of, but I thought I would ask around here as well.

Thanks for your time, I appreciate it.
