  1. Thanks for the replies.

I'll have to go through the service records when I see the car and check when the timing belt was done last. I'd be surprised if he hasn't done it in the last 10 years, he said he just does what his mechanic tells him needs to be done. I plan on taking it in to a local Subaru dealer and have them check it out.

He is asking $3,900, which I think is pretty high for the year and mileage. I want to get him down to $3,000 at the most. Does that seem like a fair deal? The body and interior look to be in great shape from the pictures. I am going to look at it in about 2 weeks.

  2. The clutch was replaced in 2006. At the 150,000 mile service the timing belt was checked and found that it didn't need replacing. Car now has almost 170,000 miles.

    Issues mentioned by seller include:

    right front axle boot torn

    rear struts weak

minor to medium oil leak at left cam real - replace with next timing belt

Check engine light comes on and off due to "engine code for throttle position sensor

The seller claims to have a stack of service records and has owned the car for 10 years.

  3. Hey guys, it's been awhile since I have posted here. I sold my 1998 OBS and I own a 1999 Honda CRV. I am looking at buying a 1996 Outback 2.2 L 5 spd.

Is there anything I should lookout for? I know the 2.2 is supposed to be better than the 2.5 for reliability. Can anyone look up this VIN in carfax? 4s3bg4853t6374129 .

I have a Pioneer touchscreen GPS nav unit in my Honda, is it possible to put the Double sized head unit in the outback? Thanks for taking the time to help me out. I hope to be a Subaru owner again soon!

  4. Thanks for the reply!

The body work was done by the dealer I got it from. They buy cars from insurance companies and fix them up and sell them. It looks good, the paint matches. The only issue is chips of paint coming off the hood, probably from highway driving. It suggests that it isn't top quality paint? The car looks good unless you look closely and scrutinize, then you notice things fit together well but not perfect. No structural damage.

I'd be willing to let it go for a fair price to a forum member. I drive it everyday and have taken it on several long road trips. It has never left me stranded. I have pictures if anyone is interested.

  5. Hey all,

I've been looking at this forum for a long time, made a few posts.

I have a 1998 Outback Sport with 148,000 miles and a salvage title. (front end collision, replaced front bumper, fenders, radiator). I got a newer car for cheap from my parents and now I need to sell the sube. What is a fair price?

It is in good condition. Newer clutch from March 2005 (20,000 miles ago). The sube has never left me stranded and I have routine maintenance on it.

Anyone ultimate members interested? I am fairly flexible with the sell date. You can buy it now (preferably) or within the next 2 months.

    Thanks for the advice!

  6. I have seen that people fit WRX seats into a 1998 Outback Sport (or any older Impreza) without any modifications required.

I haven't beeen able to locate any WRX seats near me (Nashville). Are there any other models (Suby or not) that bolt right in? I want seats that will be an upgrade in comfort for long drives, and mine are pretty worn.

I am going to look for some salvage yards, which models should I keep my eye out for?

    Thanks!

  7. I just put some Falken Ziex ZE-512 on my 1998 OBS. Stock tire size. They seem to be really great tires so far. Good in the rain and dry. They are a million times better than the Aurora tires that were on the car when I bought it.

The Falkens are inexpensive too. I got them from Discount Tire with free shipping for $180.

Just my $0.02, good luck with the search for new tires.

  8. Don't drive on sandy utility roads. Check out the before and after pics. This is three days after getting my baby. http://photos.yahoo.com/icecold_ii_2000

I feel your pain, I effed up my 1998 OBS three days after I bought it also. Luckily the tree was there to stop me. I only needed to replace a fender and fix some door dings......not bad for a high speed 360 into a ditch and a tree. I'll be more careful now.

Hope you get it fixed soon.

  9. I have a 1998 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport w/ 124,XXX miles. I am noticing a noise from the driver side rear wheel and have determined it is the wheel bearing. No grinding yet, just a high pitched noise that is dependent on wheel speed and is seemingly unrelated to the brakes. I am hoping I only need the one wheel bearing replaced...

I called the local Subaru dealer here in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and they quoted me $475 to replace ONE wheel bearing! I have read on this forum about people being charged under $300 for the same job.

Can anyone in the area recommend a mechanic that can do it for less money?

What are my options here? I am new to the area, low on cash, and I need to fix this before it snowballs on me.

    -Russell

  10. Does anyone have Legacy Outback wheels on an Impreza Outback Sport?

I came across some inexpensive 15" wheels from a 1997 Legacy Outback and am curious what they would look like on my 1998 Impreza Outback Sport. Does anyone have any pictures of this?

Should I stick with the stock tire size of 205/60R-15 or is there another tire size that would be a good upgrade? I was thinking about getting the BFGoodrich's Traction T/A.

    Thanks guys.

  11. My 1998 OBS with 122,000 has some minor electrical problems.

    1) My interior dome light does not work (I think the bulb is fine).

    2) My climate control switch only works on the highest setting and does not do anything on the lower three settings.

    3) My windshield washer fluid pumps do not work.

Everything else works as far as I can tell. I checked the fuses and they seem to be okay. Could these things all be related? I am still working on getting a service manual for the car, so any help would be great.

  12. Thanks everyone.

I was able to find some info. It is indeed based on the Impreza as opposed to the Legacy. It has the 2.2L instead of the 2.5L which is a good thing from what I have been reading?

I'll be sure to do the plugs, wires, air filter, oil and maybe the distributor cap and rotor and timing belt if I feel like spending the money.

    Thanks for the help.

  13. Hello.

I just bought a red/gray 1998 Subaru Outback Sport with a 5-spd manual tranny. It has 122,000 miles on it and I paid $4,000 U.S. I feel like a got a pretty good deal, it seems to be in excellent shape. I have a few questions for all of you:

    1) What does the "Sport" signify on the Outback?

    2) What kinds of things should I look out for with this high mileage?

    3) Are there any items you would recommend I replace ASAP just to be safe?

    4) Any other general advice?

    Thanks a lot.

(I apologize if these things have been talked about a ton on this forum)
