To all those who have experienced the dreaded Subaru Outback EJ25 DOHC head gasket problem, you’re pain is now felt here in Australia.

I am wondering if those who have attempted the not-so-simple head gasket replacement job could help me out with a few of the details… Before I attempt the job I want to be sure I am not going to get stuck part way, hence I am hoping to ensure I have access to all the required parts.

To those who have completed the job and made the effort of posting the procedure on the web I am most grateful. Having read the Service Manual I find, however, that these descriptions (at least the ones I’ve read) do not cover what to do about the described need of Subaru Special Tools.

Subaru do not sell their tools to non-registered mechanics and even if they did they would probably charge me more than my collective body parts are worth on the black market.

The Service manual states the following tools are needed for changing the head gaskets and clutch:

Crank Pulley Wrench
Shim Replacer Kit
Crankshaft Socket
Camshaft Sprocket Wrench
Crankshaft Pulley Wrench
Valve Guide Reamer
Oil Seal Installer
Oil Seal Guide
Cylinder Head Table
Valve Spring Remover
Valve Guide Adjuster
Valve Guide Remover
Clutch Disc Guide
Crankshaft Stopper
Rankshaft Stopper
Valve Oil Seal Guide
Snap Ring Press

I’m sure getting over the use of some of these tools wouldn’t be a problem once I get in there, but as I said, if I get stuck I won‘t be a happy cyclepedalbiker. If someone could let me now what they did to overcome the need for any or all of these bits I would be forever in your debt (figure of speech).
