  1. Hello everyone, I'm back at it again with troubleshooting the TB and the fault code 24 (Duty C). The only progress I made since last posting was that I swapped TCU's. This led to no change at all. I think I'm going to swap out the Duty C solenoid again, even though this one is pretty new. When I did the ohm test at the T4 connector, it was out of range (between pins 4 and 11). I'm assuming that means the Duty C is bad? But there's is a strange thing I notice that I would like some clarification on. So when I probe the FWD fuse socket at passenger firewall (key off and no fuse installed) I get ground on both sides of socket. When I put the key on (no fuse installed) I get ground on one side and 7.9v on the other. When I install a fuse in the socket (key on), I get ground on both sides. Does this seem strange? If so, I was wondering if someone here on the forum can probe their FWD socket for me and see what readings you get? Reason is that it may help me further troubleshoot the Duty C. Another question I had has to do with sending power directly to the Duct C to by-pass the harness in case that's the problem. The schematic shows that the brown wire in the T4 connector is for Duty C. But when I probe that wire, it's ground. I thought that wire should have voltage, since the Duty C gets its ground inside the tail shaft housing. What am I missing here? Thanks guys!
  2. Ok thanks. Just so I don't waste any of your time, what numbers on the TCU's have to match? Is it just the first five.........31711? Or does the entire top row of letters and numbers have to match? As I'm sure you know, there are no other years or models of Subarus that have a compatible TCM with year 1995 Impreza.
  3. IF someone can help with this question I can probably speed up the troubleshooting process. In the 1995 Subaru Impreza FSM (Auto trans and differential diagnostics section, page 39-40) it shows 2 connectors that need to be probed to troubleshoot the Duty C. One is the T4 and the other is the B9. I have an idea where the T4 is, but not exactly sure. I did find one connector in the back and on top of the transmission that seems like it could be the T4. The problem is that is only has 13 pins in the 16 channel connector. Not sure if that is normal, whereby the picture shows 16 pins, but in reality there's less? Secondly, the diagram shows that the B9 and T4 connector join together at some point. Looking at the diagram, does that mean that other end of the T4 connector, (where it plugs in),-- is the B9? Of should I be looking for another totally separate connector? Thanks!

  5. I tried to post pics of the B58 connector with pin 5 grounded under the dash, but I kept getting a message that the picture was greater than the size/space allowed. I couldn't upload it.
  6. Update: I was able to clear the TCM codes by disconnecting battery and then discharging the electronics. I drove it around town and then retrieved the codes again. I still got codes 24 & 25, but now I also have code 12 (Duty B solenoid). Hopefully tomorrow I can find some time to start probing wires. Note: If anyone wants to know how to retrieve the codes on a 95 and earlier 4EAT Phase 1 transmissions, this is what worked for me: First ground out pin 5 in the B58 connector as mentioned above. Leave pin 5 grounded and then take the car for a ride. Bring the car to a stop and follow the steps for the handshake method, also mentioned above. Take the car for another drive and you will see the A/T temp light start flashing the codes while you're driving. Even if you stop and put the car in park, the codes will continue to flash as long as the car stays running. If you shut the car off, however, you will have to repeat these steps to get the codes to flash again. I took a picture of the connector and the ground wire pinned to terminal 5 for your reference. I will post it from my phone.....on the laptop right now. I hope this can save someone else a bunch of time trying to figure this out. The 95 and earlier Impreza's (possibly 96 too) must have the ground pin in terminal 5 of the B58 connector in order to retrieve TCM codes. There is no way around this unless you have the OEM Subaru Scan tool. Hope this helps. As of right now, my hunch is that with 3 TCM codes all appearing at the same time, the most likely the culprit is the TCM. I reached out to a company that specializes in Subaru ECU/TCM repairs. They quoted me 450.00 to fix the TCM if that's the problem. Before I do that, I will try one from a junkyard. I welcome your thoughts.
  7. I think what I'd like to do is clear the codes and see what ones surface again. I never cleared the TCM after I changed the Duty C solenoid. Not sure how to clear the codes though, since I retrieved them by grounding the #5 pin in the B58 connector. Anyone know how to clear the codes with this procedure? Or is there another way to clear the TCM codes?
  8. Phase 1 Trans 24 Transfer duty solenoid: Short or disconnection in solenoid driving circuit 25 Engine torque control signal: Short or disconnection in engine torque control signal circuit Any ideas what is causing the code 25?
  9. Update: Was able to get the codes!!!! I have a code 24 & 25. I believe 24 is Duty C----I have a brand new one in there......oh well, can't always trust new parts. But I do plan on checking the Duty C according to the FSM just to make sure. I'll have to look up code 25. Thanks to everyone who helped.
  10. Thanks man. Can I insert that ground at any time to get the codes or does it have to in the midst of the handshake procedure?
