  1. All autos are the same then? I may just yank out the little tranny speedo assembly tomorrow then, and put it in my driver if it passes visual inspection... thanks for the info!
  2. Hey, I believe I have a little gear that powers my speedometer cable. I have a 1988 xt6 4eat. I also have a parts car; a 1988-9 xt6 2wd. What are my final drive ratios? I'd really like to know if I can swap the little innards so my speedometer works right again. Anyone know xt6 final drives? Thanks--
  3. Hey folks, I know this would probably have a better home at xt6.net, but no one there seems to know: Is there any way to lock a 1988 xt6's awd auto tranny into a 50/50 torque split? It does a cruddy (for snow) 90/10 split standard, and I'd like to maybe short a little signal wire to get that elusive computer controlled 50/50. Any help would be so much appreciated that if I appreciated it any more it'd be indecent. Thanks!
  4. Sicko..... No sacrelige here today. Can't fool me either. I know full well that won't bolt in!!! It'd take some crazy insane modification.... Let me know how it goes when you try! I deliver pizza for Domino's in this car. It shouldn't be out of commision for too long... (An engine/tranny swap is an acceptable amount of time... not a sub/chev swap!)
  5. Well, I posted the other day asking about my head gasket issues. Seems as if I will need to get this fixed pretty much NOW, as it's getting very hot outside and my car is trying to melt down. Anyways. On to the topic: 1: I would really just like to be done with this 230k mile motor and have a different one. I've found one with 71k on it for 400 bucks. Is this a rip off? 2: I'd like to do a manual tranny conversion at the same time, if parts permit. I know Suberdave had a kit available several months ago, but I think he sold it. Does anyone have a 4x4 manual tranny kit (minus the tranny)? 3: Are there other (more powerful and preferably more readily available) motor/tranny's out there that would bolt in that I should look into instead of the 2.7 '88 h6? Thanks for taking the time to read! Kenny
  6. You folks are cool. Thank you crazy lots for spending the time to bail me out! Kenny
  7. So my 88 xt6 has this funny little problem... It won't stay full of antifreeze. "Fix the hole, dummy!" Well I'd do that, but it is exploding out of the burp tank. "Don't overfill it, dummy!" Yeah, I'm not at all. When the car gets hot it just starts bubbling in the burp tank like crazy. Doesn't seem to be "boiling", but rather just expelling lots of air. Maybe it is boiling, but it doesn't seem like it. Would this maybe be a blown head gasket letting air into the coolant lines? Another thing it does is this: Randomly, when I first start it, when I take off to drive at a normal pace, it craps out, completely powerless and sometimes makes a couple few hollow "pow" noises. Real descriptive, yeah I know.. I fix it by flooring it and taking it to 4-5k rpms. It clears out and doesn't do it again at east until I start it again, but usually not for a couple days. Head gasket again, letting crap into the combustion chamber maybe? The third issue I'd like to ask about if I may is this. My car pings a LOT when drawing heavy compression (ie, when going up hills). Where should my timing be at for a tired 230k mile motor? The thing pulls like crazy, but it is old no matter how you look at it. I tweaked it forward a bit to try and slow the pinging down a bit but it didn't do much if anything. Would that maybe be my belts having jumped teeth? (Oh shoot.. is the 2.7 h6 engine an interference setup?) Boy, that's a pathetic lot of questions:rolleyes:. Sorry bout that. Anyone have any ideas or confirmation of my guesses? Kenny
  8. Hey, I'm in the market for a good k&n air filter. I popped my current filter off and drove around the block and... my car was like a screaming fast hot rod. Put the filter back on and it's just fast. What to do then? Can't drive around without an air filter... K&N time. There is a stock fitting filter available for my car, but will that perform as well as I'd like? Is there a cold air intake available that I've not been able to find? I drive an xt6 with the 2.7 h6 aaand I want to make it go as fast as possible. This seems like a solid, cheap boost. Any suggestions? Kenny
  9. I'm looking to slap some new wheels and tires on the ol' 88 xt6 and was surprised to find next to no pictures of xt6's with any such modification. The car runs with stock 205/60/r14's. What would look good on it in the r15 category with matching rims? (under 400 is a must, under 200 is a plus!)
  10. My dad's all cool in his big ford 4 wheeling f-150, says I should go snowdrift breaking in my 1986 4x4 wagon on a particular road. So what do I do? I go to this road. Man are those big drifts.... I rev that 4 banging monster on up to 45 mph and boy I HIT that drift. Up over top I went on it, slowed down, got stuck and couldn't get out of it. I got towed free of it shortly later, and after frostbiting my hands trying to dig myself free (note to self- bring shovel when snow hunting). So I went for a short drive to make sure nothing was broken because I just buried my car in snow up to the doors... and the car overheated. ...say again? The car overheated in the snow and ice and -10 degree weather? Yes. Yes it did. And badly too. I stop, pop the hood, and when the steam clears I see a pillar of snow and ice between my radiator/fan and engine! Not only that, but my entire engine compartment is filled, PACKED with snow halfway up to the carb
  11. Hey folks, I may be able to get my hands on a fwd xt4 manual. Can I steal the console, instrument panel, pedal assembly, and speedo cable from it and slap it together with the xt6 tranny and all that?
  12. It'll all be done at once. I'm going to have the parts sitting 10 feet away from the car when I get the car up on the lift. Well, all the parts that can possibly be anticipated. I'm not going to float it with fwd. Good info for when I need the car and things are going poorly though! The subaru dealer will be able to check the id codes, huh? That's grand. Thanks people. Any more talk about anything related to this would still be helpful if there is anything more to talk about!
  13. Alright folks. I have a line on a 5 speed trans for fifty bucks. I don't have the rear end to match, so yeah. I really gotta know how to tell what the ratio is on the trans! Anyways, I'll be patient for someone who knows all. See if I can find huck... Thanks Kenny
  14. Ok, so they virtually all bolt up, but how many will work right with the 4wd? Lots and lots of vintage 90's subarus are 4wd but... Lots of them are lever select or something to that effect. It would be cool if something else (maybe a legacy) would bolt on, 4wd would work, the driveline would be happy, and the rear end would be correct. Yeah. Donor cars are the way to go. Still gotta know though, if there's a way to tell the 3.9 from the 3.7 trannys.... It might need to be a little bit of a piece job, depending on parts availability. Kenny
  15. ...Something occurs to me. Say I find myself a transmission and want to know whether it's a 3.9 or a 3.7... Is there a number somewhere on it that would tell me that? It's easy enough to tell on the rear end, but... yeah. Anyone wih two cents? Feel free to throw them on in. Thanks--- Kenny
  16. (pretty sure he meant "wires"!) I'll definately tell you folks all about it when I do it. All a matter of figuring out what I'll drive while my beautiful speed demon is in pieces and booking the time with the resident master mechanic. Sounding more and more encouraging the more I think about it. Gotta wait till a 5 speed all wheel drive xt6 rolls into spaldings... Then it'll happen. (Spalding's Auto Parts is the local automotive dismantling and recycling facility) Kenny
  17. Are you maybe referring to the svx conversion page? Maybe I'm a little off in believing this, but aren't the svx's and xt6's pretty dissimilar? (I didn't need to register to read it... I've not found anywhere that I need to register to get to on the xt6.net site.) Under the transmission heading there was only the svx auto to manual conversion... Kenny :::::EDIT:::: Ummmmm........... no. I'm sorry. That was probably the dumbest thing I've ever said/done. Yeah. Found the forums and the registration. ....man I should sleep more.... Kenny
  18. There are no weird wiring differences for the manual? Seems like there should be.... Tach and speed-o should be different somehow... Are you thinking it's just an "easy" pull the auto one out and put the manual instrument panel in type thing? Kenny
  19. Thank you all for your fantastic responses! You saved me a whole lot of difficulties with figuring out what was going to need to happen. Out of curiosity, does anyone know anything about the instrument panel and what will need to happen there- wiring-wise or otherwise? Thanks again folks! Kenny
  20. Hey folks, I have an '88 XT6 full time awd 4 spd auto. I am certain a lot of you people reading cringed at the "auto" part of that. I did too. The price was fantastic, aaaand I needed a new car, so I got it anyways. Well. To get to the point: I want it to have a stick in it. Is this possible? Well actually, I guess a better question is this: Is it feasible? I'm reasonably handy with the tools and my dad's been a mechanic for ohh.... 25 years or so now, so technical-ness shouldn't be a problem, but how much will the wiring have to be altered? Will the manual tranny bolt right on? What will happen to the awd? I don't necessarily need a step-by-step instruction list, but a reasonably comprehensive list of components and wiring changes would be MUCH appreciated. I was thinking about the dash instruments, the center console, and the tranny as the 3 obvious changes, but does anyone have further insight? I've looked around and this doesn't seem to be too popular of an endeavor. What can I say? I'm a college student who gets bored on vacations! Thanks----
