  1. I have had the same problem on my 02 outback since new . MIne is really bad when you slow down to go thru the ezpass toll here. When accelerate away my rpms will jump up about 400-500 like im reving in neutral. Then it will bang into the gear . I have had the car looked at about a dozen times . I have evaen driven with the service rep and had it do it . They tried to say it is normal. The did a line pressure and clutch pressure check and the came back normal.I have learned to drive different now, I slow down to 15-20 miles going through the toll and that will make a much smoother shift . I have the trans serviced per subaru every 30k miles .

  2. OK all,

Found the rotella 5w40 at wally world. Was excited because i found it I didn't read the bottle .It is a syn oil. I have tried syn oil mobil 1 and it does nothing for the slap noise . The last oil change i used the castrol start up and it really quieted the slap down . With the rotella it makes the car sound like there is no oil at all. The slap is real bad and I have lifter noise for the 1st time . So I.m going to change back to the castrol this weekend .I'll let ya know what the outcome is .

I also got a suby filter from the dealer and wow is it small and black not white .

I think I'm going to use the purilator filter instead.

  3. I had the #2and#4 pistons replaced. The DSR for SOA in my area stated that there was a problem with the machining process with those cylinders. I also talked at some length with the Subaru tech at my dealership ,and he stated that the new pistons had a thicker coating of moly on them. That is supposed to compansate for the bigger bore clearance on the #2,4 cylinders.

Also just got 4 new GY Triple tread tires installed ,great tire.

  4. I have had the countermeasure pistons installed in my car . I have a 02 outback that developed the slap at 6k miles . BY 48k miles the knock was there all the time . I saw the my engine apart and the new pistons . I could not tell the difference between the old and new pistons . I did have some wear on the pistons by the wrist pins, but the cylinder walls looked great . I now have 59k miles on her and I still have some noise but alot quieter and it goes away in about 3mins or when temp is normal .

I read somewere that a loose spark plug or loose plug wire connector could make a knocking sound . Have you checked all the plugs and wires to make sure all is tight .

  5. I have an 02 outback had the #2/4 pistons replaced for slap . My noise was very bad at all temps . I still have slap but not as bad and no noise when warm. I also had the ecu reflashed for hesitation about 2 months ago. The hesitation is gone but now my car pings under load . Taking it in for some of the 60k service and going to have my TCU replaced for harsh tanny shift and harsh power transfer to rear wheels .I'm going to see if I can have them look into the pinging problem . I have had all work other then regular service done under warranty .

  6. Take the short block .I have had my #2 and #4 pistons replaced in Jan 04 for piston slap . It sounded great untill this winter . Now I have the knocking back . Not nearly as bad as before the piston transplant . I'm going to have it looked at again , but I know there answer as long as the noise goes away it is normal.

When I had the pistons replaced the noise never went away . I have a 7year 100k sub gold warranty given to me by SOA as a good faith gesture . I have also noticed that I am now burning a 1/2 quart of oil between changes . My car never burned oil. Ohh by the way i have an 02 outback with 53 k miles on it .

    Good Luck

  7. I had my #2 and 4 pistons replaced under warranty last Jan 04. The only way I know to have them install countermeasure pistons is if the noise is always there . . In my case my piston slap noise never went away even when car was fully warmed up . They say it could take up to 10-15 mins untill noise goes way . I had them done a 43k miles i now have 53 k miles and this winter i got my start up noise back . Not as bad as before and it only takes 1-3 mins for noise to go away . . I do have a 7year 100k miles warranty so I am not worried.

  8. Had the obw up to the mountains this week . WE go to ELK mountain and e stay in south gibson. Vey cold had a great time . I now know I need to tires . I'm running the stock re92's with 51k miles on them . I was pulling out of the ski area parking lot . The road is sloped to the left and i slid right into the ditch on the side of the road. I backed out about 100 feet intill the road levaled out and drove back up the hill . The grope I was with say all the wheels spining but with the old tires no traction . We had about 14 inches of snow over the week end my obw handled it no problem . Had to take it slow but will have new tires on it next year.

  9. I just installed the subaru security system upgrade . It wasn't to bad to install. My question is all the alarm features work except 1 . When I alarm and disalarm the car the parking lights don't flash . In the directions I got it says that they flash once when alarming and flash twice when disalarming . Is there a secret to programming the the system or am I screwed .

    Thanks all for reply's

Mike in South Jersey . :banghead:

  10. Went back a did a good going over of the car . It has some major issues. I checked the front diff and the gear oil was mixed with tranny fluid . I also checked the tranny fluid and it was thick and smelled like gear oil. So I assume that the seal between them went . The oil also had a white flim on the dip stick so looks like coolant is mixing with the oil. So too good to be true .

Just my luck we'll thanks for the replys anyway guys .
