  1. I was wondering if any one out there has performed a swap involving the jdm motors? I was debating starting a swap but really don't know what to expect. I have a 99 brighton that might become the new home to a EJ20DETT motor from the JDM people. I was wanting to know what problems I might encounter with the wiring, transmissions, etc? How do i identify what chasiss number I have? Most of these engines are from a GB5 chasiss. Can't find anything on the vin plate that will tell me what I have. Any help would be helpful:slobber:

Besides the interference problems the JDM twin turbo engines are very tough to get them to work properly. The origional car comes with a special programed ECU. There is also a black box controler controling the sequencial turbos. The system was susposed to spool up the primary turbo very quickly. But i understand there was a flat spot on the transsition. When I got mine I tried several ways to make it all work and I could never get more than five pounds of boost. I bought a turbo from a 2002 WRX and have been happy ever sence. I think the JDM twin turbo engines are over priced. They do have better heads and the cams have a higher lift and should produce more HP.

  2. That pisses me off. Anything I do is open and shared for everyone, other than my lack of time to post it on my site. What does someone have to loose by sharing a wiring diagram or mechanism unless they are making a product or at the upper end of compeditive racing. I am familiar with the LINK ecu, I installed one for a freind a few years back and it works well. If I may ask, why are you looking at using the mega system? Although a good system it doesn't come close to the LINK. Have you cooked up any maps for it yet? I am also considering using the Xede unit, but no firm decisions yet.

$$$ about $300 for MSnS and about $1200 for the Link. A freind has given me a map to get started with. Looking now for a wideband meter. The new MS version 3 board shows a lot of promise but MS is not plug-n-play. There needs more work on the EJxx series engines. If someone would write code for Subaru's uneven six tooth wheel things would be a lot easer. More suby fans need to bug them at the MS site then maybe someone there will help us out. I know nothing about the Xede system. Many of these after market ECU's require a tuner and some dyno work with dollars i don't have.

Like I said if you want the 4EAT info PM me your email. I see they are letting me to post attachments if there is some interest I will start a new thread.

  3. Nicely done! What sort of engine management are you using?

I am interested in doing a paddle shifter for a 4EAT myself on another car.

And I wonder if it would be easier to set up a J/K flip flop ciruit matrix or a PLC to control it or hack the stock TCU. There are some great programmamble relays out there, we used one on a pumkin cannon to fire a second burst of air midway in the barrel after the first one fired but after the pumpkin passed that point, but not too late...

When I first put the EJ20/4EAT in I used a ECU and TCU from a EJ22 (about 115 wires to deal with). It ran but would not rev up. I decided it was in limp in mode. I don't know if the TCU would work as I never moved the car. I installed a stand alone Link ECU only seventeen wires and instant sucess. I had read someone was racing a 4EAT and shifting it full manual. I found out who it was but they would not share info about how. With a little info digging I discovered with the use of three diodes wired into the 4EAT wire connectors the tranny would stay in each gear until it was shifted again.

Hacking the TCU is beyond me but I have thought around a paddle shifter. I thought mabe a racheting device on the gear selector actuated with a two way solenoid. Just a thought.

BTW I am working on a Megasquirt n Spark for the car now........

I am using a EJ20/4EAT in about the same config as your Lambo might use in a street legal sandrail. I am shifting the tranny full manual without the TCU. The linkage to shift it is very simple compared to five speed manual tranny. The only problem using it in a street car is the shift is very very firm and third gear is free wheeling. That could be taken care of with a togle switch and a timer/resister on the pressure solenoid. I have posted pics in the photo gallery. If you want more info PM me your email.

  5. you mean a setup like this with the megasquirt and edis running???

    www.oddcomp.com/topshot.jpg.JPG

there is a ea82 single turbo hiding under all that .. stuff

and goin coil on plug with edis should work fine other people are doing it on other motors

just rewire the c.o.p's to fire off the coil pack leads from the edis module

i will look into it a bit more to figure out the way to do it

yeah yeah i know i screwed up the file name .. oh well lol[/quote

I was hoping to see what others have done with the EJxx engines.

It seems the EDIS modual is output load sensitive but I plan to try just that.

The real advance for us subie folk would be if some one with code experence could make the six tooth EJxx crank wheel to work.

  6. Of course we want to know how to make a 4EAT full manual!

I could copy and paste info but there is a diagram included in the file and I am noy allowed to post attachments. PM me your email and I will send the information to you.

  7. I'm thinkin PICS!

Show us your work, there is only a handfull of buggies out there.

    We wanna see yours...

I don't know how to post pics or am not allowed.

  8. I am new here but not to Subaru. I have been running a 97' twin turbo EJ20 with a manual shifted 4EAT auto tranny in a mid-engine street legal sand rail for three years. I am working on installing MegaSquirtnSpark on another EJ20G for another future sand rail. I am not sure what way to go with the MegaSquirt. I would like to keep the coil on plugs but it may be hard to do with EDIS. Any one here doing some thing along this route.

BTW if anyone wants info on shifting a 4EAT full manual without the TCU let me know.
