Due to lots of questions and such lately about my car, I've decided to start a semi-"official" thread about lifting Imprezas. For the purposes of this thread, I will presume everyone knows how to install everything without instruction. NOTE: This thread will remain incomplete pending more information by other members. Struts: The basic principle behind Impreza lifting is that as it turns out, Forester struts are aprox. 2" longer between the spring perch and hub mount, providing an instant 2" ride-height lift. These struts ALSO allow for taller tires by providing more clearance between the hub and spring perch. Late 90's Outback struts may also provide li…

I used this in a PM, and thought it might be a good sticky. Feel free to add pics. I will eventually take all the pictures and use them in a rehosted page... post pics and description of lift and tires only. other stuff WILL be deleted. 3" lift, pug 15" alloys, 205/65r15, just a slight roll at back of wheel well in front... same lift, with 195/70r14 tires. same lift, 205/70r14 tires on genuine subaru alloys... 3" lift, 14" pug steels, 27x8.50x14 BFG All-Terrains. slight trimming of rear of front wheel well... same vehicle with same size tires, but BFG Mud Terrain. same wagon with 225/70r14 ATs, and a different Brat with 4" lift, a…

After wading through five tyre threads on one page I thought it would be nice to start a single thread to discuss our beloved Weber carbs:rolleyes: . Okay, I'll start....... My Weber works great, no hesitation, no sputtering, no dieseling on shut down etc etc. I do have two problems. No top end and poor milage (14.75mpg this time). I have re-installed the carbon can, it has a new cat, I re-jetted it (140/140 mains, 60/55 idle, 165/160 air correction), The plugs are not getting fouled infact they look just like they should. I have a Carter low pressure high flow fuel pump, the float is set right. I'm running the standard tall K&N fillter. The only thing I havn't d…

Hey folks For those of you who have gone down the path of putting a divorced transfer case and using a rear diff (plus fabrication) to serve as a front diff, how well do the diffs and cv axles hold up to the additional low range gearing? For context this is using the newer VA type 2 r160 diffs found in the Ascents and Outback Wilderness (with the 4.44 final drive) and newer style CV axles that don't have the stub out for the inner CV assembly. This would be getting mated to a Subaru dual range with 1.44 reduction Mostly curious if something like the Suzuki tcase with the extra low range gearing will be too low for the rest of drivetrain. If you've done this mod…

How would I find out what size trailing arm spacers I need for the lift i have? I have an ADF lift on my 98 Legacy Outback, I believe it's 2" (I'm not the original purchaser of the lift). Should I just measure the gap between the front of the rear tire and the fender, then compare it with the rear of the tire?

Hey everyone. I'm looking to do my own 6 lug conversion. I need to drill the holes so the lug nuts don't spin obviously. Does anyone know what size drill bit I need to buy so the splines on the studs bite into the hubs? 9/16" end wrench will fit over the stud itself, 14mm won't, but I feel like the stud could spin in the hole with that size.

I recently purchased my second Subaru Legacy L AWD. It's a 1990 and I bought it from an older lady who bought it brand new and it's in excellent shape and only has 97K miles, it's an automatic and runs like a top. I'm looking to lift it a couple inches and from what I've read the easiest/best solution is to put struts from an outback or forester on it with no other modifications needed. I have plans to buy new struts/mounts/springs and doing this over the summer since I mainly drive it in the winter. Any help/suggestions/instructions/pictures/ideas greatly appreciated. Just not quite sure what years are compatible with my 90. Also if anyone knows where the best place to p…

Hi, Picked up a '97 Legacy L Wagon for cheap to fix the engine. Has a 150K miles. It needs struts and I can buy cheap KYB's on Rockauto or Ebait for the OB, AND I'll be able to run a bigger tire (but just the stock-ish - 205/70R15 or 215/60R16). Will the Legacy Springs on the OB Struts provide any lift? Tangent: I put a 215/60r16 Forester spare on my Legacy and it clears the front and rear lower strut perch, but the back is close - both the top and inside of the tire. Also, I'd usually just buy the complete strut assemblies from the local PullNSave yard, but have had bad luck w/those as they all have a ton of miles.

Sooo. Another TR580 that Subaru wont touch.. 110k miles. I had the brake switch done in a recall but they wont touch the slippy slidy and then seized up transmission.. They said that that's out of the question. I tore the TR580 down because I dont have a choice, $6100 for a new unit or $3800 for a remain online are not choices.. Especially not for a product that cant last more than 100k miles. After owning 3 Subarus, I've got to say this is my last. The customer service just isnt there anymore and they do not stand behind their failures.. Anyways, that's a done deal. Long story short: The front wheels locked up something fierce, almost sent me off the highw…

I’m trying to decide between a used Toyota Tacoma 4x4 and a used Subaru Outback for my next vehicle. Most of my friends have been very skeptical about the off-road capabilities of the Subaru so I thought I’d ask you guys for some advice. Here is what I’m looking for in a vehicle: - Off-road ability: I’m not a recreational off-roader, but I’m not someone who considers driving to the mountain pass or on a gravel road “off-roading.” I’m a bird hunter who wants to be able to get around on the logging roads of Western Oregon and the deserts of Eastern Oregon in the early fall heat and the winter cold. This means making it across wash outs, dealing with neglected BLM …

I lifted my 2011 forester Sunday, 2" up front and 2 3/8" in the rear. When I finished installing everything I drove it around in front of my house down and back a few times to get the suspension to settle out. Yesterday when I got home I wanted to re-torque the hardware just to make sure I didn't miss anything, and noticed the driver rear cv was rubbing on the exhaust. The diff side boot clamp came off and flung axle grease everywhere. Looks like I'm not the only one to experience this, but from what I've read I can't find a fix for it other than modifying the exhaust. Have any of you had this issue and resolved it without going to an exhaust shop?

Hey guys. I bought a 2" lift for my 2011 forester last week, and purchased wheels for it yesterday. The tire chart on the manufacturer's website states 225/65/16, and 215/70/16 will work, but I bought 17" wheels. Could someone point me in the right direction for the same size tire but 17" rim?

I was snooping around when I did the gears for my Toyota, and found a crawl ratio calculator. So I punched some numbers using this as a guide to transmission gear ratio's: And what I came up with was; EA81 Dual Range 4spd Crawl Ratio of 20:1 EA82 Dual Range 5spd Crawl Ratio of 22:1 this is with a 3.9 final diff. In comparison, my toyota with the new gears has a crawl ratio of 90:1. And when I stack a second transfercase it will go up to 208:1.

So I've recently been having trouble with my starter motor. Sometimes (not often) it will start right up and other times it try for about 1 minute and it will eventually start. Now I am hearing a "clicking" like the solenoid is working but the starter doesn't turn. I took it apart and clean/adjusted the solenoid contacts but it made no difference. I pulled the gear out by hand and it seemed smooth also the plunger seems in good condition and moves easily. Will/can an auto electrician rebuild it? Id attempt to rebuild it myself but I plan on using the car soon and I can't get parts quickly. Should I just buy a new one? Id prefer not to since it's a genuine on. Cheers
