So ive been trying and trying to figure out what would be the best tire size with what i have to work with. Im looking for an all terrain tire. I have a set of m/t Toyota 6-lug 15x8" wheels and a 3" lift on my brat. So far i know i dont want to go over 27" tire for drivetrain. As of now i have the stock ea81 in it. But i have an ej22 and an ea82 5 speed dual range that will go in it eventually. Ideas? Im in California if that makes a difference

Hello all. I have a 2005 Forester 2.5x that I would love to get a rear locker into and as such, have contacted two companies in an attempt to get that going: Aussie Locker and Lock Rite. Couldn't find contact info for Spartan. I got my first response back from the makers of the Aussie Locker, TorqMasters.com and they had a few questions that I hope you all can assist me in giving the correct info. My message: Hello. I was wondering if you all plan to or currently have anything in the works for Subarus? Specifically the R160 rear differential found in almost every Subaru since the early 90's (Not the r180 found in STI's, they have enough options). I know there is a hi…

So, I spent the day building a gas tank guard/rear slider setup for my EA81 wagon. Wondering if anyone else has done anything to protect the tank? For as much as I see built wheeler Subarus, I always wonder about gas tank vulnerability. I also wanted to build slider bars so that big rocks don't hang up the rear when walking off them. I wil try to post pics once the paint dries......just wondering if anyone else has done a gas tank skid plate?

Hey folks, I know the preferred method for lifting a subaru is a subframe lift along with strut-top spacers. This worked really nice for the EA cars, but Im toying with the idea of a lift for a 98 Forester. I know there are lift kits available, and they incorporate the strut top spacers. While this does lift the vehicle very well, it still leaves the lower spring perches of the struts an inch or less from the tops of your tires. :-\ This would of course effectively kill the mounting of significantly larger tires. There was talk a while ago about someone who re-welded the spring seats further up on the struts, but in so doing... you lose suspension tr…

I've read plenty of other "long travel" threads and they all seem to end in "the axle limits travel, without $$$ custom axles you wont achieve anything." Well lets say I had some high angle axles, what would limit travel then? I seem to remember a few threads about super beetle front struts for more travel. Did any tangible results ever come from this?

This is a continuation of this thread http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/163092-and-then-i-saw-this/ but since im building a off road set up i figured i would move the thread here the first stage is new radiose arms im shooting for 2ft long and pushing the wheel forward 1" while adding some adjustabuility to it i picked up some 3/4x3/4 hiem joints and i had some nice heavy pipe the right size and some plate steal to play with First i boogered the sheet metal back on and since its only the tranny mount now it should be fine i am gone reinforce the block though just for the hell of it theres a nice channel for the new rod to sit in theres even a cut in the frame t…

I picked up a 95 impreza 1.8L with forester suspension and brakes previously installed (bad engine- swapping in a 2.2L and Delta currently has my cams). I ordered trailing arm bracket spacers and I'm pretty sure the maxxis 27x8.5x14 tires on offset dirt track wheels will clear the spring perches and won't require any (or too much) beating or rolling. That being said, I'd like to know what else (within reason) I can do to possibly get a couple more inches of lift without binding axles and such. I've read through as much of the lift threads as I can handle and haven't found a straight forward answer. I also spoke with someone at a reputable rally/off-road shop and was p…

Hello, I am a total rookie at being a gearhead or modding a car. Honestly I just work with computers. But I did see that there are baja mods for 1995 legacy models and I saw a pic of someones modded outback with a Forester suspension. I have googled for parts and don't get the exact years that I am looking for so the things I need to understand are what works with what. If any of you have experience and knowledge on this I would love to get your feedback so I know I am looking at the right parts to invest in so I can put them on my Wagon to make it more offroad and SUV styled. Below is a list of what i have searched out and need feedback on if anyone knows if …

This winter I found a JDM rear differential with 4.11 gearing and a SureTrac LSD like I've been looking for, and got it installed in the rear of my '88 XT trail runner. Obviously the new differential is the newer style with "innie" axle cups, as opposed to my original "outtie" stub axles. I found a pair of new style CV cups that fit into the diff, and rebuilt them with my 23 spline axles and original XT outer joints. I'm pretty sure this is a well-known procedure for using modern differentials with ea82 suspension, but the issue I'm having is the new CV cups are roughly half an inch shorter than my old ones. Seems like the old ones had an extension where the roll pin …

Is anybody running 6+ inches of lift on a daily? Or something that sees frequent highway use? How well does it handle it? I drive 60 miles a day at 55+ to work and need to know it can be done. I need more clearance for the bigger tires haha. 6inches + ej weight is just a hair too short for 30's. Thanks in advance

TireRack.com as of today no longer had any stock of the 215/70R-15 (26.9"), 205/70R15 (Stock '96-'99 OB), 215/60R16 (stock '98+ Forester S) or 215/65R16 (27") sizes. The 205/70R15 was on 'closeout' yesterday and low stock. They are still listed on Yoko's site. I've emailed both TR and Yoko to see what the status of these tires will be. Was looking to buy a set but not if I can't buy replacements down the road (pun intended). Anyone have an inside connection? Edit: From Yokohama - although they didn't mention WHAT the replacement is: Edit: Heard back from Tire Rack....this sounds like ALL AT-S are disco'd?

Hey folks, May one of you can help me or rather my brother: Any of you know whether the Forester/Outback tire size 205/70R15 does fit with stock Legacy1 struts on the front wheels regarding the lower spring perch? The car is lifted by relocated spring perches on the rear and strut blocks on the front. That's why I only see possible rubbing at the front. Would appreciate your wisdom here before we order new tires Regards from Germany

The weather is turning warm and it's been a while since I've wrenched much on anything. I'm likely going to replace my lifted 98 Legacy with an 05 outback project I picked up. The plan is about a 4 inch lift, 30ish inch tires and the usual basket rack, fog lights, bumper and such. I don't expect to be too rough on it, (I have a 4runner for the bad stuff) but ever since I bumped a curb in a mitsubishi about 7 years ago and set off the air bags I'm about as nervous about air bags as accidents. Would like to put a couple interior switches in to "disarm" the air bags and kill the ABS for trail time. ABS shouldn't be hard. Just pulled fuses in the past. While I can swa…

I'm swapping the whole drivetrain out of my loyale and wanted to lift it while I'm there. It's my dally so I was thinking a 4" AA lift, might go with a 6" depending on how much harder they are that a 4". Never lifted a Subaru before but I know you have to extend the steering knuckle, radiator hoses, and brake lines but is that all with the 4"? Is there more to fabricate with a 6" or are they about the same? I also found a 84 GL yesterday for free and its got a d/r tranny so I wanted to make it a trail and hunting rig. Mostly swamp or snow around here so I'd like to make it water crossing ready, maybe side by side tracks, big o lift, welded diff, ext. Will it's littl…

well its been a few years since I built myself a Wheeler, my last one for myself was the 87 blue wagon I trimmed all the weight off and added a roll bar cage and a 3" lift, fun car not winter weather friendly, the car before that 3 years ago was the bobbed goldish 91 legacy wagon dual range 8" lift, and Toyota rear axle, well now I'm ready to go a few more steps forward thinking of Toyota IFS 7.5" up front add a second transfer case and run either a yota 8" outback or a second yota IFS outback , 31" pizza cutters , bout 8-9" lift 4 door with a sedan trunk, all weather wheeler , not sure on body a EJ body's nice as it will already have the EJ engine which I want, I found a…

I was surprised I couldn't find a thread like this on the forum. So what would be the ultimate off road Subaru? Year/model? Engine, trans, diffs? Or has it already been built?

Hey guys, what did you do with your d/r linkage when you lifted your ea82s? I'm working on my buddys 4" lifted car and I'm making a z shaped piece of flat bar to drop the whole shift plate down, but the d/r lever still hits the body and won't go into 2wd.

So i had one made for my 6 inch lifted BRAT but I think I had ADF make it too long and it was super jumpy and finally stripped out while I was driving down the road the other day. Does anyone have one laying around I could buy or could someone help me determine the length of the extension needed.

I've been toying with this idea for a long time, and I'd like to pull the trigger soon. I want to bedline the whole car. I've painted a couple of cars in the past, so I know what I'm getting into as far as general prep work, but has anyone else done this? If so, what did you use? Any pointers would be awesome. Thanks.
