  1. This winter I found a JDM rear differential with 4.11 gearing and a SureTrac LSD like I've been looking for, and got it installed in the rear of my '88 XT trail runner. Obviously the new differential is the newer style with "innie" axle cups, as opposed to my original "outtie" stub axles. I found a pair of new style CV cups that fit into the diff, and rebuilt them with my 23 spline axles and original XT outer joints. I'm pretty sure this is a well-known procedure for using modern differentials with ea82 suspension, but the issue I'm having is the new CV cups are roughly half an inch shorter than my old ones. Seems like the old ones had an extension where the roll pin went through, which is no longer necessary on the new style. Anyway, the new frankenaxles are just barely long enough (I can jack the car up so that one or both rear wheels is off the ground and neither joint binds up), but twice now I've been on the trail and bounced/twisted something to the point where the CV joint (the inner DOJ) has separated. So my question is for those who are familiar with this mod, did you see similar issues? Is there a different axle option that would give me that 1/2" back? Is cutting and sleeving the axles an option?
  2. I've got a 4.11 FD ratio transmission to replace the one that's failing in my 2002 legacy. This means I need a 4.11 rear differential as mine is 3.90. I found a great deal on one that is limited slip from a JDM WRX with low miles, only thing is the axles are slightly thicker at the splines on the WRX. How hard is it to take the differential apart and use the axle-holder-spline-bearings (sorry, don't know the part name) from my old differential so my axles will fit? Is this possible?
  3. I have tried with no success to research a possible LSD to fit in my EA71 5spd gearbox. So if anyone out there has had experience with such a conversion, any information would be much appreciated. There are plenty of options out there for later model gearboxes, but I am unsure if they will fit my earlier model gears. My first question would be does anyone have experience or knowledge of dimensions of the crown wheel mounting flanges on early and late models? Are they compatible? I have not pulled mine apart as yet so I cannot measure. Second question, do all ratio crown wheels feature the same mounting flange ID? The reason I ask is that I have previously modified other live axles and they required different carriers for certain ratios. I would prefer to fit the highest ratio gears I can as the vehicle is not a road car and would benefit from a high ratio gear set. Will the centres from the rear axle, ie,R160,fit into the gearbox? Thanks in advance, Astro.
  4. The car: 1998 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS Rally Blue Pearl 240k + miles HG done at 225k Clutch still 80% then Trans noisy in all gears Has a bunch of suspension upgrades. Check my older employer's website for complete mod list and early history (I haven't worked there in 5 years, almost to the day, but they still have my car on their site.) www.mttechsuba.com "RIDES" "LEWIS' RS" Basically, it has upgraded suspension, rear LSD, bigger brakes, stereo, etc. I also have a complete set of matching seats for future repairs. This last summer, I had rear ended another car at about 10-15 MPH, it was going to need upper core support work, maybe a hood, and replace the fender damage from WCSS 8 or 9 (2nd Hood River one) where I ran into the fence in the mud pit. I removed he bumper beam in order to get radiator fans off of the belts. Secured bumper cover to car with out beam and have been driving it since. Three days ago, a chick in a ford focus abruptly changed lanes out of her stopped lane into my open lane in which I was travelling about 25 MPH. My RF corner went into her LF door and fender. Without a bumper, the RF headlight support, fender, hood is smashed in. Her insurance (Geico) says it is a total. So, do I take the money and run? (obviously going to take car back, trade some parts out, stereo, etc) Buy back and fix? or buy back and part out? I am waiting to hear from them tomorrow, Friday 02 Jan 15 If I total it and don't buy back to fix OR buy back and part out, I have a 1994 Legacy turbo wagon that needs some love. I believe the struts will swap, maybe the sway bars and suspension bits, and the brakes for sure. Then I can keep my 16" gold wheels with studs, and my '05 17" GT wheels with Michelin Pilot SS tires, sending the turbo 15" wheels and small brakes away with the RS. Any thoughts on approach here? I have changed everything in my life this last year, this is the last thing to remain of my previous life. (Divorce, moved out of house, quit 21 year Subaru mechanic career for building maintenance / operations career) I love the little car but fear it is not worth it. I don't necessarily have the time to fix it, and I am not a body guy. I know people who are (Russ:)), but don't want to waste their spare time on my love affair with this car. Any interest here for the car itself? The parts therein? Thanks for reading, let me know what you all think! Lewis
  5. Does anyone have instructions or know of a how-to describing the ins and outs of rebuilding an EA82 rear LSD? I think it's about time to give mine a refresh, but I'm not sure which clutch plates to order and a rebuilding guide would be very helpful. I have already tried searching for Datsun-based guides, but didn't find what I was looking for.

  7. Happy Thursday. No problems involved with this thread. Simply trying to identify where the rear diff. came from on my GL. Correct me if it's stock... I don't believe it is. '87 GL Wagon - converted to AWD. Stock hub drilled to 6-lug. Rear diff p# 722011002 Gear ratio - 4.111 Now, which differential w/ that part number and ratio out of the bag, would work with the original hubs of the GL? Pics if requested.
  8. Did all 94 Turbo Legacy WGN, come with an LSD? How can I tell. The car I am looking at buying has a bad auto tranny. What range of years, and models of subarus with a 5 spd would work for a swap. THANKS!
