Help EA81 Trans Leak

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone, For the past three years (giving time, money and opportunity) I've been fixing up my 87 Brat. I've know that I've been leaking trans fluid but didn't know from where. Until i recently fixed the exhaust and could see and smell it burning on the catalytic converter. Now I've noticed its coming from where the axles meet the trans. I believe its the drive axle seals (already purchase new ones). IF this is the problem how hard is it to do it at home and what else should I replace while I'm at it? Thanks

You know, if you're careful you just might be able to replace those seals without a teardown (provided it's a manual, I have no idea about the automatic). If your seals are as old and brittle as mine, you might be able to get them out without pulling the transmission apart by sinking a couple of wood screws into the seal, and grabbing with pliers. And if it doesn't work, you're no worse off than if you'd started by pulling the tranny apart.

It's a manual 4 speed 4x4. I was thinking about taking off the front suspension, removing the axles and taking off the old seals (after draining the transmission in a safe container, so that i could use the same fluid later). Then installing the new ones and reassembling all the suspension and axles. I would like to do the job myself, without messing it up and having to take it to a trans shop or anything of that nature where i would be ************ out of luck if you know what i mean
