February 7, 201016 yr The ej motor that I have has the egr valve and lines on one side and is missing in the other. Went to the junk yard yesterday and ever ej motor I looked at 91-95 didnt have the lines. Nor did the block have the ports right about the exhaust manifolds. Do I really need this? I dont live in the smog area and dont plan on putting a cat back in it. But I still want it to be reliable and is still going to be my daily driver. Could I just tap those ports and plug them?
February 7, 201016 yr Author That was my first guess. All the cars in the junk yard kinda backed that theory when I didn't see the lines and the cali stickers in the drivers windows. So I think it is safe to cap those off.
February 8, 201016 yr EJ18's should have an EGR as well as lots of EJ22's....most do around me, but depends on years and such too I'm sure. That being said it doesn't matter at all. I machined a cap and plugged the EGR in my block and used a Non-EGR intake manifold. The vehicle is more reliable without EGR anyway, which is why I didn't want it when I converted mine. One less solenoid, wiring, and valve to fail and I've seen the system screw with AT's too, totally annoying for an unnecessary system to cause drivability issues in my opinion, not my style. I'm a dorky NASA engineer guy so points of failure annoy me by nature...maybe I shouldn't drive old subaru's!?!?!
February 8, 201016 yr If you have an old EA manifold, you can use one of the EGR tubes from it to make a plug. It's the same threads as the EJ EGR stuff. Cut the tube, and hammer it flat. then it can be soldered, or left like that. Hammer it closed tight enough and it will not leak. i had to plug the port on my EJ18 to use the EJ22 manifold.
February 8, 201016 yr Author Cant you just cap the egr lines at the exhaust and then plug the vaccum lines in the intake manifold? Mine is also an EJ18.
