1997 Outback 2.5L valve adjustment

Featured Replies

I am about to do a valve adjustment on my 1997 Outback 2.5L and a few other Outbacks 2.5L of friends at my work. I have not decided to get the shim replacer tool part number 498187200 but if it makes the job go much easier I might get it, this tool replaced the old one (498187100). On a "The End Wrench" document it showed how to use the old tool (498187100) and it was straight forward on how to use it. It appears to me that this new tool (498187200) is to big, there is very little room in between the cam, the head and the valve to get this tool in there. Maybe I'm just having a brain fart on this one, so does anybody have pictures of this tool in use or know of some pictures on-line of it being used. Thanks

I typically pull the engine to do the valve adjustment.

I also don't bother doing it until the head gaskets are leaking or some other engine job is in the works.

I don't use the special tool I just measure, remove the cams, install the correct shims and re-assemble. New cam seals, sealant and VC gaskets.

Pretty big PITA to do in car with the tool. Its awkward and time consuming.

I have already read many threads on how to do the valve adjustment job, but I have not seen any write-ups of how to do the valve adjustment job using the new tool part #498187200. That is all I am asking about. Sorry if I'm being rude.
