February 27, 200422 yr Well I just bought a 90' legacy wagon, when I get it home should I look at or replace? It has high miles 162000, but I could not beat the deal. I will do all fluids, plugs, wires, cap, air filter and the such. there is a small oil leak around the oil filler housing but I am guessing it is just a gasket or O-ring. Thanks for any info you guys can give me.....
February 27, 200422 yr no personal experience, but I hear auto tranny is the problem. I had the tranny go bad on 92 Loyale at about 160K miles. Not sure why, it may have run out of oil.
February 27, 200422 yr Oil seals: Cam shafts front and rear, crank front and rear (engine or tranny needs to come out). Certainly oil pump o-ring and housing seal. Valve cover seals, including those around the bolts. CV boots will need inspection. If its and early model manual transmission, the main bearings fail around 120k, and should have been replaced. 162k miles is only about half-way for the engine
February 28, 200422 yr Setright is right: 162k is LOW miles! He also covered the common oil leaks, and there is a hesitation issue and the interior materials are sub-par... Also check out http://bbs.legacycentral.org for LOTS more info...
February 28, 200422 yr The biggest problems I've encountered have been rear wheel bearings and front half shafts. Was the timing belt changed at 120K?
February 28, 200422 yr Author I don't know about the timing belt, I guess I will have to do that one. I just got the interior parts that I needed today at the junk yard ( only one legacy there). I am have a problem with going over bumps, the @ss end seems to slide to the side of the bump? I have the air ride suspension and I heard and read that is a PITA to work on. I don't think it is working. Thanks for everybodys info. Lunatic
February 29, 200422 yr Subylvr, my 1990 "GX" did not have sub-par interior materials. On the contrary, after 14 years it still looks new, apart from a slight sag in the driver seat squab. Thick fabric covers nearly everything, and nowhere does it show any signs of friction wearing it down. All this at 190k miles! Must be why I was able to sell it for 12% of its original price
February 29, 200422 yr I should have clarified more. By "sub-par" I meant that they felt rather cheap and poorly put-together. But I also agree that the interiors somehow hold together very nicely! I've beaten my interoir to shreds, I think, and it still would clean up to pretty-much new condition!
