A Subaru Novice, here to learn

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I'm still a novice at everything Subaru, but I'm learning. Most of my mechanical background has been on Chevy products, a little bit of old BMW 3-series, and my wife's past and current Subaru. She currently drives a 2001 Forester S, which has been a reliable car but is now showing its age at 190k+ miles. With the knowledge of some Subaru gurus here, I'm hoping to get a lot more life out of this car.:D

Welcome, Fellow Chevy enthusiast with an interest in Subarus. The majority of my wrenching experience also comes from working on mostly Chevy and other GM vehicles, however I have also had a Subaru or more since about 1989. Have done almost all of my own work on all of my cars.

I have just completed restoration on my second first gen Camaro I did almost all of the work except the finishing bodywork and paint.

This forum is an excellent source for Subaru repair and modification information.

I try to do all of my own work, as well. Only a few exceptions...like internal differential stuff or valve jobs. What year is the first gen Camaro you just did? Six years back, I restored an '84 Camaro sport coupe (well, mostly restored). I did all of my own bodywork and paint with single-stage acrylic enamel. It was a fun project. I imagine a first gen Camaro (especially something with more than 6 cylinders) would be a lot of fun to do.

Welcome!

What do you mean by "showing its age"? At that kind of mileage, has the head gaskets went yet?

No head gasket problems, no. Just a bunch of little things...windshield stress crack at bottom, blower motor, front diff, mystery oil leak, ripped CV boot...that kind of wear-and-tear stuff. Still goes from A to B without a problem, though. That's why I want to get on top of the issues...it's just been too reliable of a car to let it go.
