Hole in resonator, CAI decent alternative?

I got into a collision in january and that was one of the results. I just left it. I'm thinking I'll just make my own CAI, so it will cost about 50$, is this the way to go with a big old hole in the side of my resonator? It still SOUNDS fine, but that's gotta be hurting performance, i would think. Any advice on where to stick my air filter? Was figuring 3" PVC aught to do the trick, and i have a few feet laying around. It's a 2002 OBW H6.
