I have access to a grunty lathe so I was considering machining a wee bit off the flywheel or at the very least cleaning it up before getting it balanced.

 

But looking at it, it is not all that big anyway.

 

Is there any benefit to lightening such a small wheel?

Hi Dirk. It may not look big but it is quite heavy. I had mine lightened by about 20% years ago and the engine revs very nicely. It did seem to make a difference in responsivness at the time but after all these years it just seems normal. Anyhow if I was you I'd do it.
