Well your cams are 180 degrees out.

The crank needs to be turned another 360 degrees to bring the cams up to proper alignment.

Then there is the issue of arrows vs dashes. The arrows are ONLY for marking top dead center and can not be used for setting cam position when placing the belt.

Each cam sprocket has a notch on the outer edge that will be 45degrees from the arrows.

This thread has links with pics for proper crank and cam alignment. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showpost.php?p=952890&postcount=7

So if I spin the crank 360 the way it is now (with the belt on) it looks good?

FYI I went .008" on the intake and .010" on the exhaust

Anyone know where I can get a crank timing pulley cheap I noticed I have a broke tooth on mine.

$20 shipped. Also do engine work (heads, complete rebuilt engines, etc if you have bent the valves and need help with that).

The arrows are only for keeping track of what cylinder is at TDC and valve adjustments. Nothing more. Its frustrating that they made the arrows so obvious and the notches so subtle but you do have to know what you are doing too.

Sorry to say I believe you have probably bent the valves in the engine. Hope not, and wish you luck.

Man... it would suck if you bent the valves you just repaired...

There are lots of threads (maybe too many!) here that have all the information you may need to do the timing belt correctly. Or you can check the endwrench articles, which are excellent. Look under the "engine" section here:

Best luck!

It doesn't look to me like it's very far off, but the cams need to be turned 180 degrees so we can check the dash marks against the notches in the covers. With everything just like it is, fully intact, turn the crankshaft one full turn, the cams will make a half turn and their marks will come up to the top, where they will be easier to get pictures of.

One thing I do notice in your pics, the dot on the crank sprocket is behind the mark by about half a tooth. The notch for crank alignment is just to the right of center (actually towards the drivers side of the car) of the crank sensor. It looks like you have the crank sprocket lined up with the center of the sensor and that's wrong. Clean the dirt and crud off the housing and the notch will become more visible.

Thanks Fairtax, I sure it's just the timing as it runs but sputters and occasional backfire. I re check and test thanks again.
