Bother with seperator plate & main during clutch job?

Featured Replies

I'm in the middle of replacing my transmission and clutch on my '96 Legacy 2.2 w/248k. My question is do I bother replacing the seperator plate (it's the plastic one) and the rear main seal. It appears that neither are leaking. I'm inclined to install the metal seperator plate and leave the main seal in place. I understand these rear seals are not prone to leaks. There is also no guarantee that it won't leak if I stick a new one in. Any thoughts?

If the rear main isn't leaking, leave it alone. The oil separator plate should always be done if it's plastic and replaced with a metal one. Either the older cast aluminum plate will work or the newer stamped steel one. You may need different screws with the stamped steel one.

Yes to the first, no to the second. It's a miracle that plastic separator isn't leaking. Replace that, and pick up the $2 O-ring that goes under the wrist pin access cover while you're at the dealer. Those like to leak too. 806931020 <--- Part number! :drunk:

You do need new screws for the new steel plate, most dealers sell these with the plate as a kit.
