April 29, 201213 yr 2003 Subaru AT Outback has no back up lights and 1th gear light will not light up in dash most of the time but when its cold it will and reverse lights work once care warms up have a hard time getting it in low gear and no reverse lights. Plus its a swap from a 2003 2.5 EGR engine to a 2004 2.5 non EGR engine which is another issue but not as much as no reverse light. Thanks for any help new here and have driven Roos all my life.
April 30, 201213 yr I don't think there is any adjustment for the switch but the shift select cable is adjustable, and that may be causing the problem, but a bad switch or poor connection is more likely.
April 30, 201213 yr Author Thanks for response been a mechanic all my life and this one is puzzling i checked the adjustment on the select cable and the trans range switch with the 5/32 drill bit and seem to be all good a little play in the bushing in the end of shift lever but no more than my bro in laws 2001 outback. Wiring looks fine trying to find a price on the part will have to call local Subaru dealer today for pricing thanks. Plus not the easiest place to work on something.
April 30, 201213 yr Author Subaru wants $83.80 for part, now my other issue is bolts breaking off in the trans case trying to remove the old switch, I took one off an old trans we had lying around hear and no matter what i did all three bolts broke. Yes there is an adjustment on this switch by the way. Maybe running car and getting trans case good and warm or up to temp will help in bolts coming out in one piece. I tried to replace right front fog light broke bolt.
April 30, 201213 yr Yeah if you're in the rust belt, good luck. Soak them all down with pb or something for a few days/ weeks beforehand. Did you check some of the online Subaru dealers for better prices? 1stsubaruparts.com usually has a good discount, shipping might make it not worth it though.
May 1, 201213 yr Author Thanks for the info ya have them soaking this week and Thursday i am going to try and loosen them one at a time, even the one that was out on the ground i worked the bolts back and forth and sprayed good with Rust buster etc and they all broke well i have to get it fixed some time this year.
May 11, 201213 yr Drill it out and put inserts in it. Difficult but possible. Otherwise the case needs to be replaced.
May 12, 201213 yr Author Ya I know thats what I do not want to have to do with the one in the car the on on the ground is junk so thanks for the info.
