What do you call the little backing plates that clip onto brakepads? (94 legacy) could lack thereof contribute to the squealling of my brakes? are these available online anywhere? i tried my 2 local parts stores without any luck, perhaps a stealership?

and they would be a dealer only item. They are there to help prevent squeaks.

On mine I use those, brake anti squeak you spray on, and brake grease to keep them quiet.
