I have been reading that cheap Honda civic coilovers work for lowering a EA81. Has anyone heard of this or done it?

yes, they will work, but spring rate will make for an old ride as the front springs will be substantially higher than the rear torsion bars. A work around for this is to purchase miata front shocks, and ea82 top hats for the rear, declock the torsion bars and let the springs do the work.
