Is regular (87 octane) gas is ok for a 1999 EJ25 DOHC engine? When I search this I find that while the 1996 had HLA heads and 91 octane gas was recommended,

in 1997-1999, different lifters were used and the octane recommendation was lowered to 87.

Is this correct?

Correct, only the 1996 2.5 required 91 octane all other Subies with the exception of turbo models run fine on regular.
