How to Set the Timing on my Subaru

Featured Replies

Its a 1990 EA82 automatic trans, EFI engine.

Did some searching and I believe its supposed to be 20* BTDC.

Now I assume its hook the timing lite to #1 and view the timing marks on the flywheel and adjust the dizzy as necessary

Heres my real concern.

It appears that the dizzy is already twisted to its clockwise maximum position.

So if I need to rotate it more in that direction should I pull the dizzy and drop it back a tooth (assuming it has a gear- Amenrican engines that I am familiar with have a gear)

I wanted to add a few degrees for some more pep in this dead rump roast engine.

Am I on the right track?

Thanks for any replys,Oldmics

Perhaps it could be st wrong. Yes, you can lift it out and re-clock it. Make sure you don't get it 180 off. You can determine #1 tdc by observing the cam positions (with the outer covers off) for the compression stroke.

The cams are out of phase being there are 2 cylinder banks and the engine is SOHC

The other thing is, that to check/set the ignition timing, you need to tell the ECU to quit futzing with the timing while you try to check/set it.

To do this, you need to connect the two single-wire green connectors that are by your windshield wiper motor.  This puts the ECU into a diagnostic mode.  When you are finished, you need to unplug these connectors; otherwise, your ignition timing will be locked at whatever you set it.

Adding more advance probably won't get you anything except pinging.  The SPFI engines are set up pretty well from the factory, with little other than disappointment when thinking that you can get more.
