Does the throttle body forget its settings if the battery is disconnected for a month or so. I know that some cars are like that. My 2000 legacy runs fine but it idles around 1500rpm and searches for the correct idle speed it varies about 500 rpm between 1000 and 1500 rpm

NO it does not. Perhaps the idle air control valve is stuck open, or there is a vacuum leak. Maybe you knocked something loose messing with the battery.

 

DO NOT make any adjustments to the throttle body.
