December 20, 201312 yr Earlier this week I posted some questions about whether the transmission or just the Front right CV joint is bad. There is definitely a spot where the wheel gets stiff when turning with all wheels off the ground. Haven't disconnected the right CV joint yet but here is a picture of there oil from the transmission. The good news is there no metal pieces found in the oil, but there definitely is fine brass or some metallic wearing going on by the oil condition. What do you think?
December 20, 201312 yr Looks like some synchro material. Not bad as long as no chunks of steel put magnet in it see how much sticks to it. If not much steel then it all fine. Stiffness in a turn is more likely the axle than in the trans. If it binds up like brakes on and hopping tires then could be torque bind seized coupler
December 20, 201312 yr Looks like transmission oil that hasn't been changed for a long time. If the binding is only on one wheel the problem is likely confined to something that affects only that wheel. Axle, bearing, brakes, suspension bushings, etc.
December 20, 201312 yr Don't shift into first while rolling as this ruins the synchros in subaru transmissions.
December 20, 201312 yr Author Thanks for your comments. Have loosened the CV boots and both indicate plenty of grease without tearing. Should get the axle out today and see if binding disappears. Still worried about the binding and clunking symptoms that caused the initial concern. Also there was oil leakage from the area at the engine transmission junction, possible indicating seal leak caused by increased rotational abnormality possibly caused by transmission wear.

Can you tell if its motor oil or gear oil? Leaks from the bellhousing are usually from the separator plate on the engine. Very common leak point.
