June 30, 201510 yr 2000 Subaru outback started making strange "stretching" noise (hear it under the front floor) when making sharp left turns. I just had my timing belt replaced, and the mech. said he would check the other belts as well. Is this related, or is it something else? Also had the rack replaced a few years ago. Thanks for any input. Ben
July 1, 201510 yr Can you get a video or sound clip? Is it louder on tighter turns? Check power steering fluid levels? Likely unrelated.
July 1, 201510 yr Author I tried getting a video but it didn't do it that last time. Today it did. I'll check the fluid level. It's like a high-pitched growl, like a stretching sound. Hard to describe. One other post had a similar sound and it ended up being a broken muffler mount near the cat converter. I had that (both front and rear) replaced about 3 years ago. Thanks for your interest.
July 9, 201510 yr Author Turns out the mech. who put in the new timing belt kit forgot 2 bolts on one of the plates, which was rubbing on the tire when turning. Coat me $10.60 to fix! Whew!
