Engine knock when hot, ej22

Featured Replies

Hello again,

Just working on my 99 impreza outback sport with the ej22 and am puzzled by the engine knock coming from the passenger side rear portion of the engine. Definitely seems to be at the timing of that piston but is silent at startup for 10 minutes, then develops once the engine is up to temp. The crank and rod bearings are brand new...

It's possible that the sound is coming from the cylinder head but I can't be certain.

These heads have the type of tappets that you just loosen a nut and tighten down with a screwdriver....I'm not sure if that helps but I know the hydraulic lifters can be noisy.

I'm not sure where to start...the short block was just rebuilt.
