2010 Forester Fog Lamps - the plot thickens

Featured Replies

It turns out the fog lamps do work... sort of... but come on an off somewhat randomly. I am hoping the following info might allow any "techie" folks reading to assist me with their expertise if possible.

So far I had thought they were not working because I would turn on low beams, then fog lamps, and nothing... no lamps and no fog lamp dashboard indicator light.

However, last night I was driving, and I guess I had left the fog lamp switch (on the lighting control column) on from earlier, I went to high beams and then when I returned to low beams suddenly both the fog lamps themselves and the indicator were on. A few more tries going to high then low and most (but not all, hmmm) times fog lamps would come on. Turn fog lamp switch off then back on (while on low beams) and sometimes they would come on sometimes not. Then this was odd: one time I turned on the turn indicator and that made the fog lamps go off.

They were turning on or off in conjunction with some change/input to the lighting control column. Once on, they didn't just randomly turn off while driving unless I did something else to the lights control, so I don't think (?) it's loose wiring or connector.

All other exterior lighting seems to be functioning normally. Any suggestions or advice, for cause or possible solution, to this newbie Subaru owner muchly appreciated, please + thanks.

Cheers,

Neil

p.s., I am new to this forum and not sure if I should have started this as a new topic or stayed in thread from my previous topic... so I started it as a new topic, based on experience with a similar motorcycle message board

New info pertaining to the same topic or problem is usually best kept in the original thread. Keeps things organized.

Is the fog light switch on your car part of the same stalk as the headlamp and turn signal switch?

Yes it is all part of the same stalk, or what I was calling a column,

I don't have a service manual for the 2010 forester, but somewhere there's a relay for the fog lights. Might be in the fuse panel, might be under the dash on the drivers side somewhere. I would try replacing the relay first, or if it's the same as a relay for some other component try swapping them and see if the lights work properly.

If they still don't work properly the switch stalk may need to be replaced.
