Axle castle nut size

Featured Replies

Hi - I'm looking into replacing the wheel bearings on my 1990 Subaru Legacy. I don't have a socket large enough to remove the axle castle nut - anyone know the size? I know it's larger than 27mm! :-)

Thanks!

I'm getting ready to replace my rear ones too. The nut size is a 32MM. BTW let me know how the wheel bearing replacement goes for you.

yeah, he's right it's 32 MM. Older soobs are 36mm. You can get either socket at Sears for about $6-10 or so.

Get at least a half inch drive socket and a long breaker bar. I had a little trouble because I couldn't generate enough torque to loosen the nut without everything rotating on me. Wish I would have had an impact wrench.

There's a good bearing "how to" in the online Subaru End Wrench if you didnt know about it.

Thanks for all the replies. I have the castle nut off - had to use an impact gun, and it took quite a beating before it came off! I then used a puller to remove the hub. Here is the 'spindle' looking in:

Hi - anyone know how to remove the bearings? I'm wondering if it is really necessary as the bearings are still silver and shiney, and don't appear to be scratched. Perhaps it just needs to be cleaned, and regreased?

Thanks!

I decided to just clean the bearings since they appear to be in good shape. Unfortunatly while cleaning, two of the bearings came out of the hub assembly, and I cannot find them.

Anyone know where to get new ones?

Thanks!
