July 12, 200421 yr Sorry to post what is probably another redundant head gasket question, but here goes; I just purchased a 98 Legacy Outback Wagon with 116k on it. It is in very clean condition, has had the timing belt replaced recently, has a new clutch, and CarFax says there are no open recalls. I bought this from a used car dealer that specializes in pre owned subaru. (He has a good reputation) He said at this point there are no signs of head gasket problems, but based on all the posts, I'm sure that someday it will be needed. I'm a former auto technician (Master certified ASE, Chevrolet, & VW). Has anyone attempted to replace their own head gaskets, as opposed to taking it to a dealer? If so, what kind of job is it? Thanks....
July 12, 200421 yr he did a very nice write up when he changed his. Frankly yours is about like doing two Hondas with two heads and two timing belts I believe.

July 13, 200421 yr FWIW, I'm beginning to think that SOA is technically correct in saying they don't have a problem with head gaskets. The real culprit may actually be warped heads - which leads to head gasket failure.

July 13, 200421 yr on my phase I engine, the heads were not out of spec. I had a machinest check. they didn't require any reconditioning, though i had new valve guides put in. iirc, 99obw's weren't warped either...
